New Company: Her Majesties's Lost Company (WIP)
« on: October 28, 2013, 03:10:29 PM »
Rough working background will be expanding:
During the Anglo-Zulu war some 1,727 British soldiers died were killed or so the history tells us but this is not entirely true the number is off by about 100 men, H Company of the 80th Staffordshire Regiment . At the Battle of  a small British camp was over whelmed and destroyed with only three survivors ever being found. When the Relief column arrived they saw a large host of Zulu leaving the burnt sight of the camp and taking with them everything, supplies, wagons, weapons and to everyones confusion the bodies of the slain the entire site was wiped clean. In truth the entire company was saved by the intervention of one man, Dr. Robert James Pensley or as many call him now  "The Time Traveller". He had joined the British army as a civilian engineer hoping to see the world and to get away from the place that reminded him of the death of his wife. A inventer and engineer by trade he did upkeep on the Companies steam machines and weapons. He was with H company that night to work on on the supply columns steam tractors. He also was secretly working on a device that would allow him to travel back in time and prevent the death of his wife but it was far from finished. With the first shot and alarm warning by the sentry Robert activated the device and was winked away along with all the men of H Company and several Score Zulu. Travelling far into a dying future the time machine is damaged and these men both British and Zulu realized they had to work together in order to survive and after about 4 years the company with it's Zulu allies is able to repair the time machine and jump back  blindly trying to reach the right year, they fail ending up in 1895 standing in Parliament Square in London.

Expiation: I have a fair number of Martini Henry armed british troopers and I love H.G. Wells's Time Machine so I thought I would combine the two and make a company that uses my out of date figures and several of my Reaper Time Travellers. My First character is as follows. Please tell me what you think.
Dr. Robert James Pensley
Pluck: 3+ FV: +3  SV:+4 Speed: +1 Cost: 67

What a novel idea!

Heroes, Villains and Fiends has stats for the Zulu and the Queen's Own African Rifles, so that should help your project.

Thanks Craig, I am getting the PDF of Heroes, Villains and Friends when it comes out.

Craig, it is your world when did the british first use steam walkers? Where there Steam cars and such during the Zulu wars or is that a newer invention?

To quote IHMN, Section 5.5:
"Since the advent of the Herbert S.Johnson Mechanical Strider in the USA in 1881, the range of both civilian and
military variants has multiplied rapidly."

The British bought a dozen Mechanical Striders through an 'intermediary' in 1884, Prussia bought some a year later and the French the same year. it is only in the late 1880's that Military versions began to appear (in public).

There had been steam land vehicles since the 1860's.

Hey Craig will Heroes Villains and Fiends have more information or a howto on designing steam vehicles? I want to make a Infantry support Landship, with some Gatling guns and a Zulu war era light field piece on bow of the ship but I have no idea where to start with that stat wise.

Added a few more Characters to my Company tell me what you think.

Captain David Moriarty
Pluck: 3+ FV: +4  SV:+4 Speed: +0 Cost: 46
Tough
May choose one addition ability at cost.
Gear
Steel Breast Plate
Sword
Pistol

Captain David Moriarty: Historical he was well known as a fighting Captain but a poor leader and tactician. He was one of the first people to fall at the  Battle of Ulundi taking two Assegai to the back and being shot, before he expired though he shot three Zulu and stabbed several more. He was also directly responsible for the historical defeat due to several tactical error and non-regulation construction of his defences. I have as such made him a fighting officer who does not have any leadership but rather he just a tough old bastard who packs a punch.

Well it may not be a landship but at the end of this week you will be able to buy a time machine as Westwind are putting their Requiem range on sale!

Nice original concept and list, well done...
