The Back of Beyond book includes only army lists for Contemtible little Armies. It's are written by Chris Peers, so as with most of his rules they might work well if you're able to understand them. Don't get me wrong, they sound good enough to me, but without help from someone who knows them it's really hard to get into them, as they aren't very well structured.

But I'd say that even on its own BoB is worth a try, as you can use the army lists with other rules sets with vey little work and it's a great guide to who was involved in the central asian chaos.

seconded, Chris Peers book is a great BoB armies compositon guide with lots of useful infos, never regretted having bought it, no one another book/rules work is offering all that stuff.

Chris Peers Back of Beyond research is without compare - it is wonderful.  However I am less of a fan of his Contemptible Little Armies rules for this period.  Even navigating them is a nightmare - there is no index for example.  They are (probably) good WWI rules, but 70% of what is in there is irrelevant for Back of Beyond.

Well if for nothing else it should be good for fluff and TO&E so I might give them a go

Anyone thought of using Brother against Brother for this period?

Ranges are good and figures are in squads of 10. They can be devastating at times with good die rolls but that is the same with any rules.

We have been running a back of beyond adventure/campaign for several years and it has morphed through several sets of rules including Chaos in Cairo (West Wind) (great for role-playing hero level games), A Good day to Die (skirmish) and Contemptible Little Armies (full scale battles). I agree that the CLA rules could be more accessible, but they do make for a fast game once you have picked up the basics. There is a yahoo group backofbeyonddiscussion which uses CLA mainly and has some very handy resources, including playsheets, and well worth a visit. An index would be nice though - perhaps I may try to produce one.
