Battle of Shaftesbury - Coat of Steel
« on: April 21, 2017, 08:51:37 PM »
I formalized the end of the campaign. With all the vicissitudes can be found here: https://vk.com/topic-90445881_35117896
Here in detail the last battle of the campaign:

Battle of Shaftesbury

As already known, the Yorkists, under the command of Earl Warwick, were confronted with the Lancastrians under the command of the Duke of Somerset in the vicinity of Shaftesbury town, in Dorset in the south of England.
The situation has developed so that the victory of one of the parties leads to victory in this campaign.
The Lancastrians at a critical level of confidence in this campaign and defeat will automatically lead to a complete loss of influence in England, which in turn will lead to the inevitable expulsion of the Lancastrians leaders from the country.
The Yorkists are sorely lacking in supporters and troops, so if they are defeated, they simply do not have enough strength to continue the armed confrontation with the Lancastrians, who in turn gathered a large number of supporters in the center of England for their banners.
Warwick had not succeeded in intercepting Somerset, who landed at Southampton, and Somerset was able to connect with Earl Devon, who hurried to his rescue from Okehampton.
So, the meeting of irreconcilable opponents took place in the vicinity of Shaftesbury ...

The Lancastrians had more troops than the Yorkists. But most of the army were hastily assembled militiamen, ready at the first opportunity to escape from the battlefield (2nd and 3rd companies in Devon, 3rd and 4th companies in Trollope).
Realizing the importance of the battle, and suspecting the presence of the Yorkists cavalry, the Lancastrians chose a defensive tactic - from defense. Ward of Trollope fenced off with stakes. Somerset himself settled with his strike company in ambush in the forest, in the center of the position of the Lancastrians.
This time, the Lancastrians guessed with the location of the Wards on the flanks.
The Yorkists really prepared a shock fist consisting of Salisbury, Audley and Clinton's Riding Retinues, under the command of Earl Salisbury.
But the sight of a multitude of stakes before the Ward of Trollope led the Yorkists into a stupor and the battle turned into a repetition of the last, tragic for the Lancastrians, the battle of the previous campaign, under London. Only the participants changed roles, which was shown by subsequent events...

As it was said above, the Yorkists stayed for a long time in an inexplicable daze, being under the fire of the Lancastrians' artillery and bearing absolutely unjustified losses! The commander of the Lancastrians was already going to send a herald to the Yorkists with a ridiculous anecdote, which would somehow lead them out of a stupor... :D

Finally, the army of Yorkists began to move. But it was already late. The cavalry could not immediately leave the zone of action of the artillery of the Lancastrians and, in addition, fell into the zone of action of the Lancaster archers. After suffering a critical loss, the Yorkie's cavalry could not stand it and fled.
Similarly, other Yorkist units suffered losses from the Lancastrian arrows.

The offensive on the left flank of the Yorkists was stopped by the murderous fire of the Lancaster archers and artillerymen. The warriors of Warwick, disoriented by the standing under the fire, flinched, and the wound and death of the commander, completely undermined the morale of the soldiers. Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick was murdered ... this was the last straw and Warwick's company of battle took flight.
On the right flank, the Yorkists, lightly battered by the fire of the Lancastrians, crashed into Devon's battle formations ... but it was not their day, in the fierce battle, March's Ward was overturned and put to flight...
Somerset appeared under the signals of the Trumpeters, under the fluttering standards from the ambush! But his participation in the battle was limited only by this pompous appearance,... throughout the entire front, the troops of the Yorkists were overturned and fled.

The battle ended with the complete victory of the Lancastrians!

The Lancastrians dragged an organ into the field, but it was never fated to shoot...  :?

After such a devastating defeat, the Yorkists realized the futility of the further struggle. The leaders of the Yorkists went into voluntary exile. England stayed behind the Lancastrians!
Thus ended this campaign "The Calais Lords Return", which was not successful for Yorkists.

Looks great fun, I can't say I've played the WOTR, though I do own a couple of boxes of Perrys.

Thrilling! Love your graphics and campaign map. Reminds me of long-ago days playing the board game "Kingmaker." Ever since then I've always thought the Wars of the Roses were particularly suited for such a map-based campaign with tabletop battles, and still harbour a hankering to do it one day myself (not going to happen, though, unless someone is volunteering to paint all the figures for me).

So the Yorkies got a good kicking. That'll learn 'em. Oh well, never mind, eh? At least they have the consolation that they thumped Lancashire in the Roses One-Dayer at Headingly a couple of weeks ago. :)
