Scenarios from the "Combat" TV series?
« on: October 27, 2013, 01:36:17 PM »
All,
Perhaps a crazy question here, but.  Has anyone collected the actual episode "scenarios" from the "Combat" TV series?  I've watched a few recently, and tried to play out the scenarios with some success.  I wonder though if anyone has done a proper compliation of them with maps, objectives, etc.?

never heard of it before....
I just watched a few snippets on Youtube
now that's a grandad treasure...

it's so cute  lol - but the acting gets the price....
the german isn't half as bad

but You are right - the scenarios are rather simplistic and should be suited for wargaming  ;)

at least the willing suspension of disbelief is on about the same level in both settings...

Wow, I am taking the bit about the acting back  :D
I just saw the episode where James Caan guest stars the german NCO, brillant.

It is interesting to notice that the cast, being all veterans, clearly know what they are doing, and the "german" ones have obviously been stationed in Germany, since their german is clearly comprehensible, not just parroted.
The acting however is mediochre compared to the real actors, and they clearly play against the poor scripting and directing.
Very interesting period piece, worth a lot of reminiscence about the old days, when I was but a lusty glimpse in my parents' eyes  :D

Thank You very much for introducing us to it

Combat! was a staple TV show in my house as a kid.  Vic Morrow was one of my heroes.  I have never thought to convert each episode into a specific scenario...just use the show (from memory!) as inspiration.  :)  I know someone who has the entire series on CD and may be able to borrow them and have a try at it.  (Don't hold your breath, though, as it will take plenty on horse-trading to get them!!)

I'm asking because I really have a hard time writing scenarios from scratch.  I was hoping that someone out there had the same idea but more talent.  A fellow on TMP suggested looking at Korbel Winery with Google Maps to get most of the regular terrain features.

My one piece of advice is to avoid playing anything within the arc of a helicopters spinning rotor blades. If only Vic had listened.....

Takes me back thinking about the series. My favourite episode was in two parts called "Hills Are For Heroes" where the Germans are hold up in two bunkers defending a key area of ground and Rick Jason and his platoon are tasked to take them out.

Cheers,

Helen

Nick,
There is a book where every episode in the "Combat!" is listed.  you may find it useful/inspirational.
Check Amazon.

Wikipedia has info on the episodes - not sure if it's enough for scenario design though?

When I first got into WWII gaming, we played the first season out on the tabletop battlefield.  Every episode is in essence a great scenario for some brilliant skirmish gaming.

Great show that makes for great scenarios,
Brian
