but with a modicum of reason.

That's all you really need to apply.  :)

However that would also include the question of 'how plentiful is the ammo for the weapon'? Could we make our own? Bullets even up to .50, are somewhat more easily constructed than rockets or recoilless rounds.

As far as 'size matters'... here's my favourite photo of the M56 Scorpion firing its 90mm gun;

Despite it having recoil dampening and it being actually designed to use the weapon it mounts, the experience of actually firing it probably gave a 'clench factor' of about 6:10.

Looking up a bigger pic, but here's some food for thought. ;D

They're doing it in Syria as well, however it lights the technical on fire from what I can gather.

Lots of 12.7's, Hind rocket pods, ZSU guns, etc.  Remember most of these are put on before it's considered whether or not it's a good idea.  You'll see lots of videos of them firing these weapons and the vehicle rocks back 45 degrees as the gun fires.  They're not planned out very well most of these.

I'd perhaps consider adding a serious to-hit penalty for the use of the bigger weapons.  There is a video from the Libyan conflict showing them hoisting a technical with a rocket pod up with a crane...leaning one edge of it on the roof of a building and then firing it.

Safety..last.

A recent "Twisted Nederland" fail video showed a technical with an 82mm mortar mounted in the bed. It was firing successfully until a dud round failed to fire.  The crew bailed out...quickly.
