Flying Ships
« on: November 27, 2013, 11:07:50 AM »
Before I got the IHMN rule book, I ordered a flying ship from ironclad. However looking through both IHMN and HFV I can't see any rules for such a vehicle, have I just missed it, or is it a case of modifying the existing rules?

Nope, no rules for military vehicles beyond the smallish walkers.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Dans les situations critiques, quand on parle avec un calibre bien en pogne, personne ne conteste plus. Y'a des statistiques là-dessus.

My own battles suggest scales tend to be small, a bit tight for flying, or fast-moving, ground action.

However, I've been longing for some ON 'nef action; have to build me a deck, I fear...

Not really the game for it currently, although rules mods are encouraged.

Depending on the size of nef, isn't it just mobile scenery?
In the same way that a full size paddle steamer or a train would be?

Thinking back to things like Cthulhu on the Orient Express etc.

i'm planning to use 2 flying machines in 2 companies :

a stukasaurus ( the eureka one without the MG and the bombs )

and a small dirigible ( the tobsen 77 one ) .

so i'm interested in any idea ...

stukausorus is terrifying, pilot with pistol and bombs , ok

for the dirigible , i think to use the ornithopter stats , with "fragile , subject to zeppelin syndrome, act as a monster brick lane bottle within 6" when hit the ground ) ...

In Her Majesty's Name was written as a Victorian Science Fiction game with its feet firmly set on the foundations laid down by the Science Fiction writers of the period, and the available technology given the advances described in the foreword.  Other than dirigibles, the concept of aeronefs and other flying ships did not really appear until later in the 20th century, thus they were not included.

That said we encourage people to be creative with the rules to get what they want to play. In Sleeping Dragon, Rising Sun there shall be the full rules for a Naval Gunboat which, with the addition of Cavorite or some other lift component, could be used as the basis for an aeronefs.

While I appreciate your decision, Jules Verne wrote of aeronefs and that gives them a sound basing for VSF in my opinion. Definately a writer of the period  ;)

That said, I'm not sure they are suited to the game unless you were to scale it up rather a lot. As has been said, a nef on this board size would be more terrain than participant.

The problem is that flying ships will rapidly go from one side of the standard IHMN 36" square battlefield.

OTOH, a flying ship might not be too big to completely put on the table. Most battles involving people will be boarding actions -- two ships side-by-side or one ship being boarded by figures capable of individual flight.

(in the Space 1889 game, this could be a gunboat under 35 yards long being swarmed by High Martians)

i was thinking of flyers of the size of the ornithopter , more or less ...

not of biggest airships like "l'albatros" or the "go a head" .

Boarding actions could be abstracted.  Some kind of ongoing challenge with opposed rolls for ship piloting to place broadsides where you want them, and some kind of athletics checks to determine swinging across or using jet packs to get to the right areas.

Possibly something along the lines of one of Todd Sander's games could be used to abstract the larger scale aerial combat.
