Hasslefree "White Ops" Figures, uses for them?
« on: November 28, 2013, 12:49:11 AM »
All,
I've been thinking about returning to modern era skirmish games. With that however, comes the question of whether it is in good taste. That brings me to the Hasslefree "White Ops" figures by Frank Hammond.  Are they Near Future enough to use as opponents for modern Taliban?

They certainly look the part to my eye. I can't say if they are accurate in terms of modern equipment though. The good taste question is a fair one but I think if we are to complain its in poor taste then so are many modern wargames that are the same wars in all but name.

If you are looking for ultra moderns then The Assault Group may have some decent looking stuff patically their Afghan Militia http://www.theassaultgroup.co.uk/store/home.php?cat=40 I have no experience with this particalr range but their medieval asia stuff is great quality.

I have yet to meet any soldier offended by wargaming modern conflicts.   I have had a couple watch, give hints on tactics, and ask questions but not want to play.   I've also had several play.

The military uses 'wargames' to plan and rehearse operations and tactics (and strategies too for that matter).  Electronic, figures on sand tables, and others.

Games like Call of Duty are a BIG hit on every FOB in Afghanistan.

So as for being tasteful, you may bother someone, but in my opinion not people that matter too much.

Like nudity on a figure this is very much "In the Eye of the Beholder" Territory and I think it might be inappropriate for the thread to wander too far down that particular dark alley.

On Topic, by modern are you talking "today," "last year," "last decade" or "somewhere after World War 2" like Vietnam War, or something to likely occur (like we can predict <insert irony or sarcasm smiley icon here>) in the next year or decade?   I think you are asking about the last one...

Gracias,

Glenn

I find many of the "modern" gamers are serving military personnel.

You may want to have a look at The Battlefield : miniature modern warfare.

why don't You game near future and avoid the problem?

a "children of men" or "world war Z" setting would be modern enough and offer more oportunities

Then theres also the modern's that Kev are and have sculpted, with the more BF3/4 loadouts and apperances which should look good as modern/nearfutrue mercs.

The WhiteOps figs are using a near future rifle looking similar to the sig 553 and the machineguns are a bit more sci fi,closer to halo in design.

I think when Frank had them sculpted (by Richard  Ansell aka Woody) who has done TAG and Minden he wanted them more near future than space though I know he was after something at the time a bit along the lines of the copplestone troopers etc.
