Keeping all the rules straight
« on: December 13, 2013, 03:35:32 AM »
Researching Napoleonic era rules for those elusive large battle rules (two previous threads) I "googled," Ebay'ed, etc. and found there are a lot of rules with similar names.

One example: Corps d'Armee and Guard du Corp for example.

Other than the http://www.deepfriedhappymice.com/, has anyone tried assembling all the rules for miniatures rules of the Napoleonic era?

Especially any attempt to show what the scale of command (Corps, Division, Brigade, Regiment/Battalion,) is and things like representational scale (1 figure/miniature = 60 men, 20 men, etc.,) ground scale, and all the other details we war gamer types use to differentiate what kind of battles/games we are recreating/playing?

Here is the effort mentioned above:

http://www.deepfriedhappymice.com/html/pov_napoleonics.html

EDIT:  I thought about removing all the redundant "Napoleonics" in the list but decided it was OCD beyond even mine.

Nice job on the list, did you miss "Valmay to Waterloo"? Lol! Now you can plainly see why we hung up napoleonics for awhile, to many rule sets that played to slow, and with the average rule set seeming to be around only as long as it took to rebase for it we were done!
People lament the fading out of "napoleonic" war gaming desspite 10,000 napoleonic wargamers across the country, well with every group playing a different ruleset, scale, and not being able to agree its no wonder. If there was one rule set and one scale you would see napoleonicsstart to succeed in a "games workshop" kind of way! Imagine being able to drop by a different shop, pop into a pick up game not having to figure out a different rule set.  :-*

Well, I think that would be horrible.  I would never want anything to succeed in a "games workshop" way.  Just my skewed viewpoint...

I don't want to (and can't) paint large figures, at least well enough to do 25+ mm figures for an realistic looking army.  Not skirmish forces either although that doesn't seem "Napoleonic" to my mind, which is my limitation I realize.

If one extended that to other eras/genres... shudder... no, definitely not something to be desired by me.

One Ancients rule set?  One Medieval rules set? One "Lace Wars" rules set?  One (to mix eras) American or English Civil War set?  One fantasy rule set?  One Science Fiction Rule set?  One (mixing periods again) World War One or Two set?  No, I wouldn't see that as a desirable situation at all.  Lowest Commo9n Denominator kind of fear, I suppose.

Gracias,

Glenn

Can't take any credit for the list.  I just did a copy/paste of others' hard work.

And, yes, I believe they did miss that set!

Very good spot, sir!
