Vehicles for your expedition
« on: December 10, 2013, 01:45:34 AM »
I recently took advantage of a sale to buy a couple 1920s expedition vehicles by RAFM. My goal: To recreate the Central Asiatic Expeditions of that decade, famous for its discovery of dinosaur fossils and eggs. Unfortunately, the vehicles themselves are 25mm scale, so they look small next to my 28mm Copplestone figures, but I can live it given I bought both for under $20.

This is what I seek to recreate (from a 1925 brochure Dodge used to sell its vehicles):

If you want to know more about the vehicles used in the expedition, here is the blog post that came from (with more pictures): http://whalescampsandtrails.blogspot.com/2011/03/how-dodge-put-go-in-gobi-part-2.html

I will probably use twine and string for rope. Any ideas about where I could get baggage to put on the vehicles? I thought about trying to scratch build some but not sure where to start.

As far as the rest, Copplestone has me covered, with a paleontologist figure, camels with baggage, several Mongols.

Especially that last car.

Ditto what Fram said.
(I also responded to your post over at TMP.)

I look forward to your seeing your expedition come together  :)

My .02 Lupins:

For baggage (tent bags, tarps, bedrolls, etc.)  I'd suggest GS or sculpy. You could also use tissue paper or similar, soaked in white glue water mix as dust covers/tarp.

For the sculpy, rough fit on the vehicle before baking... use a fine mesh med gauze to give texture and obscure any fingerprints.

Lots of O scale accessories out there that would work.

Check out 1/35 armor modeling sites for ideas on stowage techniques and tips.

Good idea. I will give that a try.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I purchased a diecast Matchbox Crossley off eBay to fill out my expedition. One more question: To repaint a diecast car, is it necessary to strip the paint off first or can you just use primer over it? (Stripping the paint may be an issue for me, since I live in an apartment and can't use any heavy-duty strippers as a result.)

I just primed right over the paint. I haven't had any problems.

Such a shame the RAFM vehicles were 25mm...I picked them all up and was so disappointed. Looking forward to seeing how you progress though!!
