A house, a lake...
« on: December 13, 2013, 12:30:10 PM »
Hi everyone !

I didn't built anything from more than a year, but now I've got time, I'd like to start a new project. I don't play any game but I like building  stuff, and sometimes painting minis. My speciality : starting something and never finishing it...  :'( I hope I'll finish this one !

I'd like to make a quiet and peacefull landscape, with an old house with a view over a lake, with rocks on the backgrounds.

One of the challenge I'll try to succeed is to make... a tree ! I never tried to build realistic trees but I think it's pretty hard, so let's see... And let's go !

So let's start with a piece of styrofoam : 40 x 30 cm. This the base of my scenery.

You can see the place where will stand the house. I also cut the wall of the house into foam core.

The house will have the feet on the water, that's why the base is not flat. Now assembled, with a 28mm minis for scale (a saxon, not really in the mood of this scenery, but this was all I had at the moment !) :

I digged the part where the lake will stand and shaped the slopes on the background, and primed the house in black :

I took my hammer and started nailing planks on the wall :

Then assembled :

That's it for the moment, I'll try to give you some news very soon !

Thanks, and forgive me if you find syntactic mistakes, english is not my native language  :P

Great start! I like the "skin" of wood. Nice idea.

Thanks Grant !

I often use this "skin" of wood, like in my old west buildings in this topic.

I started a tree, with a base made of iron wire and cable wire, and a layer of modeling clay (plastiroc).  When the clay was drying, I marked the tree horizontally and vertically, trying to recreate a realistic bark. That wasn't easy... Finally, I added sawdust on the trunk to give a rough surface.

A few photos :

It's quite a big tree, maybe too much !

(sorry for the dark pictures  :( )

Have a nice day !

Thank you von Lucky !

I made some painting today : yellow-orange for the walls, white around the roof, door and windows. I weathered it with brown paint, and that's how the house looks now :

Sorry for the quality, even the colour doesn't really match reality, I'll try to soon take pictures with a real camera, not with my phone ! :(

I created a little porch behind the entrance door :

The bonus : I built a little picnic table ! :)

Next step : build the windows and a door !

Bye !

House and land look great as well mind you.

Looking forward to the water steps - main problem for me so I will watch with interest.

Are you free for a picnic party AndrewBeasleay ? :D

I bought Realistic Water from Woodland Scenics a year ago but I never used it yet... So it will be a discovery, I hope it won't ruin everything.. !

I had some very very bad experiences with Realistic Water and stopped using it:

  • Bubbles that would not shift
  • Not drying
  • Shrinkage like you would not believe
  • Soft - leave a model on it for an hour or so and a base mark shows up
  • Cloudy

Hence my interest in others doing water.  I am currently trying a two part mix that is going really well - no photos yet though.

Oh, did you have all theses troubles even with thin layers ? I hope it will be ok and make a few tests before. Your two part mix seems interesting, I'm waiting for pictures  from you ;)

I kept going with the tree, that's how it looks like for the moment :

I put some fibre, and some flock over it, maybe I'll add some more flock for a better cover of the fibre. The trunk needs now a few drybrushes, I'll add some moss too !

Nothing really new yet, I just add plaster cloth on the base to make smoother relief.

See you next year ! :)

I'm liking it  - the truck looks almost done. The foliage needs a little more, hanging bits or darker? I'm not sure. Great aready though.

That tree is looking good.  I think the moss and a few dry brush coats will work well.

Have a happy new year.
