What do points make?
« on: December 14, 2013, 06:09:00 PM »
I have realised that across the globe people are playing to 250 points like it is the standard company size. In IHMN Charles and I said that when you first begin playing then a force of 250-300 points is enough until you get comfortable with the rules.

So what points size do you normally play to, if you use the points system at all?  We'd be interested to know... :)

I personally would take a force of 300-350 as it allows you to use a couple of leaders, and nice range of specialists, some decent troops with some of the optional extras and even a vehicle or walker.

300-350 seems like a good total. It'd be a shame if we end up with a games workshop style codex creep though. I wonder if we all need to be a bit careful before we start escalating points totals and character costs too high?

I could not agree more, especially on the cost of characters.  It is tempting to write lists that are character and specialist heavy, a trap Charles and I have come close to falling into more than once.
I find that the most fun is had though where you carefully balance a list so that there are enough troops to be able to carry you forwards to achieving your objective.

Absolutely! In fact I may already have fallen into the same trap with the sky pirate company...

I think part of the issue (for me) is the comparatively small company size. The temptation is to turn every figure into a specialist or character from a fluff or back story point of view, and the stats tend to follow!  :D

Tree don't feel bad about this I have been doing the same thing with several of my leagues I make way too many specialist and then skimp on the basic troops. I had to put several of the fancy leagues on the back burner well I make some new generic leagues so I can work on making things balanced.

My gaming group is still in the throes of desperately trying to break .....er I mean learn the rules and as such we've kind of abandoned the points in favour of playing to a storyline where each game feels like an extension to the last one.

If I had to give a value I'd say we play between 100 - 250 points each game although we do tend to have 3-4 player games which does take more time to play and therefore we keep the figure count down.

Playing 250 companies at the moment because I just don't have enough mini's for larger ones. I got about 7/8 mini's each for my factions. I'm the only one of my friends with VSF mini's too so I'm providing all the mini's at the moment. I did knock together a quick US Marine Corp list (from the book) so a couple of my mates and I could have a 3 player game. My mate used his GW Cadians as US Marines. My Department Of Topography & Statistics company is made up of three Specialists from the LAM VSF range, padded out with four Ironclad British Line Infantry. 7 mini's in total, but I've won more games than I've lost with them. So far.

The group I'm in usually play in the 250-300 span.
