The 13th Warrior
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:43:29 PM »
Hoi!

I got my order from the Foundry today (Modern TV Crew) and as always they included some free swag in the order.  For 4 figures in the set, they sent me 2 freebies!

One is a Roman in the plate armor, very nice!  The second is a quite oversized Viking, which got me thinking...

Does anyone know if anyone did a not-13th Warrior range?  Or ideas for proxies?

I don't think there ever was a specific 13th Warrior range,
You'd need twelve vikings and Ibn Fadlan.
In the book 'Eaters of the Dead' Mr. Fadlan got all his equipment from the vikings I think. I'd try to find a beardless viking and paint it with black hair.

Now, the wendol is interesting. Pulp Neanderthals, fantasy ghouls or savage orcs I would use.
If you don't believe in lead, you're already dead.

To add Sgt Major miniatures has hill men in thieir old range which would work well. If you dont mind a little cartoony then baeuda have their Trogs range..prehistoric Orcs ;D

For Banderas, you may also find someone suitbale amongst Byzantine ranges perhaps

Man...my favorite film.  lol (and no...I'm not joking, something with this charming film has always resonated with me!)

Vikings are easy enough...and Ibn is equally easy (as mentioned Viking and/or an Arab of the time).  Now for the Wendol, it all depends on how you read the book, or if you're trying to replicate the film.

For the film version you'd be looking for simple humans wearing some type of animal skins.  Freeblades does these two which are wearing Bear skins etc.

I think something "like" those would be appropriate.  Or...as mentioned if you go more fantastical either cavemen or anything up to ghouls/orcs.  I'd always wanted to buy one of those gigantic 4Ground Viking houses, and play a big convention game of hundreds of Wendol storming it...(sigh)... :-*

Black Pyramid do a set of multipart 'not' movie-Wendol and a chieftain - in metal. The sculpts don't look very good on the website, but I'm not sure if that is the paintjob or not. It might be worth checking them out

Eureka actually does Beowulf and companions seemingly derived from the film, including an "Eastern Companion" ("the 13th Warrior?):
