Paint colours for the 14th Army 15mm
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:43:30 PM »
Just unpacked my 15mm unpainted lead collection which has been in store for over a year and decided to paint a platoon or two of my 15mm Peter Pig 14th Army to pit against the Japanese i've already got painted but not certain on uniform colours/tones and wondering if anyone could suggest Vallejo or Humbrol acrylics which would look good for the uniforms.

Have seen various illustrations in a few different publications and they all seem to differ. Any paint suggestions would be great :)

I use US Dark Green for the battledress, highlighted with green grey, washed with Badab Black, highlighted again with Green Grey.
Backpacks and pouches are Khaki highlighted with Iraqui Sand and washed with Agrax Eartshade.
Mind you, I'm painting 28mm figs so my colours might be a bit dark for 15s

Thanks  :D
You might try Gunship Green as a base colour, its lighter and a little more greenish and might work with an overall wash of devlan mud/agrax earthshade. This way you wouldn't need to wash with black and the figs would be a little on the lighter side (something I prefer for 15s).

Tried your first suggestion last night on a few miniatures and it does look a bit dark but i like it :) and will give your other other suggestion a go when i get the paint at the weekend.

There seems to be a fair amount of variety in the uniforms in the reconstruction illustrations that i have found and imagine uniforms would have soon faded or gone darker whilst on campaign through the humidity, heat and day to day wear.

A great uncle on my Mother's side of the family fought in Burma and he used to tell us tales of the lighter side of being in Burma but he never went into any real detail about his combat experience but from family accounts he did see a fair amount of it but kept that to himself. This force i am putting together as a tribute to him and his mates who felt that the public had more or less ignored their war in Burma and didnt really want to know when they got back home.

These have been done with US Field Drab which worked pretty well IMHO

More of his work can be seen here

I've only done a couple of test pieces of my own and used DecoArt Crafters Forest Green which is similar

The uniform colour would vary quite a lot, and also was dependent upon if the wearer was wet or dry, so you can pretty much get away with an appropriate shade of green that takes your fancy. I used a basecoat of Vallejo Gunship green on my 28's

There is a painting guide in this article on my Scrivsland blog.
