Fantasy skirmish.
« on: December 18, 2013, 08:52:12 AM »
I'm looking for a fantasy skirmish game, small game, ten to twenty miniatures or less even. Something that involves magic and has a good character generation and levelling tool.
Wide variety of races would be good or perhaps even something that let's you make your own race with just basic stats,  Any ideas other than mordheim?

Song of Blades and Heroes!

Not a lot of magic in it and only simple campaign system in the core rules but endlessly extensible and customisable as well as a lot of fun.

I've heard a lot of good things about that. Is it worth it? I see it has a few expansions as well, are they necessary to make it better or do they just add complexity.

I only have one expansion - Song of deeds and Glory which focuses on provider richer campaign systems for your games.

Definitely not necessary since the core game provides you with everything you need to expand and customise your games however you please.

There's also Warrior Heroes - Legends by Two Hour Wargames - http://www.twohourwargames.com/wahele.html
I don\'t know whether to be a good example or a horrible warning.

Pulp Alley works quite well for Sword & Sorcery skirmish/adventures with around 5-10 models per side.

You can download a free version from Wargame Vault if you want to see how the mechanics work -- http://www.wargamevault.com/browse.php?manufacturers_id=5628

Yes, it is definitely worth it, and you can play it right out of the rulebook; the revised current version has a compilation of many of the rules previously found in the 1st ed. expansions
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Haven't tried it for fantasy, but I think it would work, too. You just have to come up with some fantasy flavoured names for the plot points  ;)

Actually, I think it would work for any kind of setting, as long as things are adjusted accordingly

Warploque miniatures are in the process of completing their Arcworlde rulset, which is a fantasy skirmish game.  I backed the kickstarter, but the rules are not yet ready.

I think I've been convinced to get song of blades and heroes. I don't really like getting PDF versions but may be forced to as the postage seems to be more than the actual book! I may be able to find a better deal somewhere other than the ganeshagames site.

Edit, found it on amazon and got it for $9 shipping with  $1.50 off the original price. So about $23 all up. Happy me.
The fact it can be played in such a short time is the bonus for me.
I found an online copy on scribd (I know naughty) but it really made me want to buy the book so I guess it was a good thing. Now I just need to figure out what sort of warband to make!

I'm a big fan of Brink of Battle myself. It's pretty much the most easily customized system I've played so far, as you build each of your guys from the ground up. It's got a campaign system, too, so room for growth on your guys.

It's a historical rules set, but it can be used for pretty much anything, and I believe they are coming out with a fantasy supplement early next year for magic and such. Definitely worth checking out.
