Ok, I have one.
Is there somewhere I can read about (or preferably, try out) the actual mechanics of the system?

Those are both good starting points for you. Anatoli's first interview is linked in the second one. The second one discusses the Epic Heroes book more.

The WSS review breaks the entire game down.

Maybe Umbra Turris?
A relatively new fantasy skirmish from Poland. Each player controls a group of 5-15 characters, each of which is made individually. You've got 12 races (with subnations) and 40-50 classes, which you can mix almost freely. 11 magic domains, each with 3 spells.
Unfortunately, as of now there are no campaign rules nor monster rules (both of which are meant to be written somewhere in the future).

The rules are free and can be downloaded here:

(I'm not sure how good the English translation is.)

For those finding SBH to be a bit bland, I definitely recommend the various supplements. Song of Deeds and Glory is a very nicely constructed campaign system, and Song of Gold and Darkness is nice for those wanting an old fashioned dungeon crawl.  Song of Arthur and Merlin is another supplement that really expands the scope a bit.

Equally important however, are good scenarios.  A document available here:

contains every warhammer skirmish and mordhiem scenario converted to SBH. It was pure gold for our campaign, and for pick-up games, it gives you 80 scenarios for games that aren't simple kill-em-all.

Or if you look around there are over 100 scenarios written for Mordheim :P lol, I just coulden't get on with the dice system and too few stats for me.
