Help deciding on my next project
« on: March 28, 2014, 05:05:56 AM »
The end of the month is approaching and I would like to lighten my wallet by dipping a toe in a new project and the Interwar period has come up a winner. Good so far, but I am undecided whether to go IWI, SCW or VBCW.

Therefore I am seeking input from more experienced heads than mine. So, if you were going to focus on one of these for the next year (I am a slow painter), knowing what you do about the pains and joy of each of these historical happenings (VBCW did really happen and don't let anyone tell you differently), which have you enjoyed the most and why.

Vbcw all the way

Plus the forces can be used in a variety of settings
Pulp, ww2(early) etc

You can also base this in your locality

Loads of resources on vbcw forum

SCW.

The truth is stranger than fiction, and it pretty much has everything you could want from a period.

You need to work out what rules is best suited for you to enjoy playing the period
I will be completing my SCW this year, using Chain of Command Rules

so if you go for this and need any info, just pm me.

Disagree on determining rules first

We have used WTDW, bolt action, and will be trialling coc plus a world aflame

These can all be used for scw and vbcw

Really depends on whether you want to build/have English or Spanish looking terrain

When you spend £20 to £30 on a set of rules plus all the extra eg bolt action army lists around £60 etc which I have and play WW2.
I have loads of sets of rules which I have read and played a few times, but then collect dust.
no point on spending loads of cash on figures if you can't find a good set of rules to enjoy playing them with.
VBCW is not something I am into, so I can't comment.
We can't all be rich and have a shed :D
You could try Empress miniatures on the three interwar periods figures ranges they do.

I have to admit I select the period (or the figures choose me) and then spend forever looking for the right rules.  lol

As for choosing that period, you have to go with what excites you the most. I can see the appeal of VBCW and I'm quite enthusiastic to see it prosper, but I don't play it... SCW has its claws in me, as indeed does an idea for an alternate WWII-style setting a few years earlier than the real one.

You don't even have to go any of those routes, the Interwar period has a lot more to offer, although figures can be a problem. You could also even create your own setting and go from there, VBCW started with three men in the bar at a wargames show, something else could start from a few guys on a forum.

 ;)

Sorry David - did not mean to offend.

The point I was trying to make was that you should choose your period on the basis of what you want to play and on what you might already have from a terrain perspective....then find the rules that work for you.

We are blessed that there are so many rulesets for all periods - bolt action is great fun and it works for so many periods.

PS - yes I do have a shed but I am most definitely NOT rich ;)

Grab a Militia Spanish Civil War force and it can do double duty for VBCW in a heart beat.

BUT, SCW pretty much has everything you want when it comes to varying troops types and it has a nice infantry focus supported by all the nice bits that never really overwhelm the foot soldier....and near on the best figures you can get for any period from Paul Hicks' hand sold by Empress Miniatures.....and I believe there will now be more on the way!

...Spanish Civil War is a winner with lots of support reading material in English and Spanish.

With careful buying you could do both VBCW and SCW with the same figures, and use them even for ww2 as partisan types.
