Fast-Play Rules for 1:1 Modern Tank Battles?
« on: December 24, 2013, 08:39:07 AM »
Just curious to see if there are any recommended rules sets for quick-play, 1:1, Modern and Cold War tank battles?

If I recall correctly, Fist Full of Tows, and Tankwreck, amongst others, are 1 vehicle = a platoon of vehicles, rather than 1:1 scale (one miniature = one vehicle).

Is it possible to use the above, without unbalancing the rules, if I were just to switch to 1:1 ratio, instead?

One of the concerns I have is adjusting for various sizes of vehicle platoons, when using the intended scale, e.g. some platoons have 3, 4, or 5 vehicles in them, which could cause complications.

I'm thinking that pitting a battalion or two of Soviet, or Warsaw Pact Tanks and APCs vs. various NATO forces, might be quite fun on the tabletop, and depending upon the opposition, air support, helos, etc., could permit quite a bit of good replay value on a limited budget, if using 6mm forces.

Some scenario ideas are: attack/defense, meeting engagement, follow-on attack by Soviet/WP reinforcements, counterattack by NATO assets, etc.

Any thoughts and recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Try these:

They were used by both the Canadian Forces and the US as war-games rules.

The WRG rules are fine. The other option would be to track down the old Bruce Rea-Taylor ruleset Challenger, these represent tanks at 1:1 and infantry as elements rather like the WRG rules but rather more detailed in terms of armour penetration, sighting systems etc. I played a lot of this back in the late 1980s early 90s before moving on to Command Decision. They probably cover, what you want and are ideal for company sized games.

Another favourite of mine are Bernard Garaty's quick play rules
