Any leads on sources for horses?
« on: 27 December 2013, 12:11:52 AM »
I'm finally putting together the two-horse carriage from the Empire of the Dead: Requiem kickstarter, and I was wondering about the possibility of replacing the horses. The ones in the kit aren't that great, removing the integral bases from them was a chore and pinning the hooves onto the plastic base I'm using may well fail. Anyone have any leads on potential horses I could use?

Empress have some very lovely cavalry horses. Not sure if that works since I don't see any yoke-harnessed horses, only ones with riders.

I guess I could always scratchbuild the harness on a "naked" horse. All I have in my bitz box are some old plastic GW horses, and they're a bit big. Clydesdale-sized, at least.

Front Rank Miniatures sell separate horses...
A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://tistaminis.com/

Thank you, those might do the trick. I know Ebob Miniatures has some of the nices ones in the market, but most of their stuff is only available with a commercial license.

I used Conquest Games horses to fill in for Sub-Roman riding horses. The only tack on the body is a saddlecloth and twin girths, with bridles and reins on the heads. They're nice sculpts, good anatomy, easy to assesmble and competitively priced. Worth a look?

Very obviously riding horses as opposed to cart horses, but the anatomy looks good to me and at, what, 20p each, what's to not like?

The Assault Group has a large selection; mostly riding horses. Some might do the trick.

For what it's worth, I think the anatomy of TAG horses is pretty ropey - the eyes are in totally the wrong place.

Thank you, everyone. Those will get me started, definitely. :D  Work is progressing rather slowly, anyway. I had to rebuild the rear axle assembly with brass rod (to give enough clearance for the doors to open) so it'll be a while until the question of horses becomes a pressing one.

Essex Miniatures has previously sold me horses from their various sets.  They're 25s rather than 28s and you'd need to email them for availability and pricing.
My LAF Gallery is HERE
Minis (foot & mounted) finished in 2025 = 74
(2024 = 38; 2023 = 151; 2022 = 204; 2021 = 123; 2020 = ???)
