help needed: cavalry division coponents
« on: June 05, 2008, 12:34:17 PM »
Dear All,

After reviewing the paintings on the link I posted in my previous topic, my appetite rose to organise a bolshevik cavalry "division" .

I have in mind approx. 36-46 mounted miniatures.
What other components do I need to field for my division?
[ obviously I need some MG mounted on tchankas, any other ???]

Please advise your ideas.
Thanks in advance

Red cavalry division (before 1926, similiar to the russian army of 1918) consisted of four cavalry regiments, one cavalry artillery battalion (18x76mm field guns and 12x122mm howitzers), one HMG squadron and other support units (7230 soldiers). A cavalry regiment consisted of four sabre squadrons (120 soldiers each, cossack squadrons (sotnya) had 100 soldiers, ), a HMG one (16 HMG's on tachankas) and an artilelry one (2 artillery batteries with 3x76mm field guns each). A squadron (sabre and HMG) consisted of four squads and a command unit.

Dear Prof.

a very detailed answer! Thanks a lot.

Now the tricky question: who makes artillery limbers etc paraphernalia (compatible with Copplestones)

And, does anyone know who makes carriages suitable for tchankas?  Once again of a scale compatible with Copplestone??

Eureka Miniatures have a tchanka:

I'm unsure as to how it compares to the Copplestone figures, I'm afraid.. :?

too small.

Steve, feel free to use any carriage you've got or would find, it wasn't standardized.

that one is from a russian movie about Nestor Makhno

Good lord! Thanks for the warning Prof. I was eyeing the 28mm Eureka Ghurkas hungrily this morning.

I think the Gurkhas are another matter. Remember Eureka does several scales.

Yeah, but they are both listed in the 28mm section. I think I will have my spies eye them up in person at Historicon.

Brilliant - Eureka 'Mini Me's'!!  I knew they were small, but that is ridiculous!  lol

Excellent tips on the tchankas.  I will have a look for Victorian riding carriages, etc......this hobby just gets stranger and stranger...... (one hour later)....can't find a suitable cart.  Any suggestions???

I do have the Eureka's tchanka (a very nice model) and indeed is small against the Copplestones.

I think if you field it away from the other figures, the difference might be less visible.

Let's hope that someone will make a more decent tchanks in size.

What I have been doing is for the large figures like Copplestone, I mount them on a standard washer.  For smaller ranges (almost everybody else) I mount them on a normal plastic base.  This levels out the height differences, although on some figures you can still see quite a difference because of the width of the body.  Still, it gives the illusion that the figures are more or less the same.
