Source for 1/56th BTR-40/152 or RBY MK 1?
« on: December 29, 2013, 04:50:24 AM »
I'm looking for either of the aforementioned vehicles for use along with my post apocalyptic Chinese forces (I found this to be a more suitable board than the one with all the leather clad bikers). Specifically I'm looking for a vehicle that may have found its way into Chinese hands (thus the Soviet ones, though it is an alt history setting), or at least something similar looking, ie with a blocky profile and wheels. The RBY MK 1 is an alternative to these for my intended use (due to one appearing in the 2000AD comic Tiger Sun, Dragon Moon, in use by some post apocalyptic Chinese soldiers). Though I'm open to suggestions of other vehicles should they prove a bit iffy to find.

From my brief search I found that CompanyB intended to produce the BTRs, but they're listed as WIPs on the webstore, so I'm guessing work hasn't been done on them for a while. A user over on Shapeways sells a BTR-40, but for the price I'd prefer an actual kit (though that may not be an option). As for the RBY MK 1 I can't place any at all. I suppose the scale may be a tad awkward for these types of niche vehicle (...despite them all seeing wide use), but I'd appreciate the help.

I believe Brent suggested the BTRs will be coming out in Feb or thereabouts. The shapeways BTR 40 is the same master as the one for Company B. If you can wait a month or so, then you'll have the resin version. Nobody currently produces kits of any of those vehicles in a scale compatible with 28mm figures.

There is a die-cast 1/43rd BTR 40 which regularly (fortnightly maybe?) turns up on eBay from someone in eastern Europe.  I believe it originally came with a magazine.  On the big side, and not cheap (£15-20) but it might be an option....

I have the old Solido 1:43 BRDM-1 ATGM variant, it's way to big for 28mm.

@ carlos marighela

Ah yeah. Well I'd prefer the options available on Company B's site over Shapeways (only the BTR-40 is available there, the rest aren't for sale), as do I just prefer resin figures in general. :)

I would prefer something at least resembling the real world scale of the vehicles, but leeway's possible. Though yeah, 1/43's probably too large.

So Company B it is then for the BTR's? All right then, I suppose I can wait a while (my Chinese infantrymen aren't going to be appearing any time soon either). Still, a pity that they're difficult to find, but I suppose the later BTRs are more popular. The same goes for the Israeli vehicle. Barring seeing use by the IDF (which game allows you to play as them...), I suppose they would only be fielding alongside South American/ African forces, mercenaries, etc, ie again niche areas. Pity, perhaps someone produces a toy of one?  :?

Apart from the Israelis only a couple of Central American armies use the RBY so yes, I suspect it's probably too niche to expect one anytime soon. That sais, it's not really an overly complex shape so quite doable with some plasticard and some spare wheels.

I'm just waiting for new printed masters on these.  The original masters were printed a year ago, and the models were updated and printing technology advanced since then.

I have the new BTR-152 masters now.  Just waiting on a set of the BTR-40 and BTR-50 in the new ceramic medium.  The M41 Walker Bulldog and M51 sherman are putting the print shop into a frenzy, so once those beasts are done, the BTR's will follow.  Apparently, these new 3D printers cannot print in cold temp.  So they have heaters going to keep the printers warm!  I'd hate to see what the failure rate is on them.  Probably bins full of misprinted tanks I'll bet.

Incidentally, our compatriot in the UK has the updated masters for my BTR-152 and BTR-50 right now.  He may have them available for Salute 2014 or sooner!

You should find a printer here then , it's about 36 C today and the thermal sensation is over 40.
