6, 10, 15mm?
« on: January 01, 2014, 03:46:25 PM »
For a few years I've had the idea of starting up a wee range of 10mm fantasy minis, partly as alternatives or even replacements for OOP Battle of Five Armies - and now Warmaster - minis. It's been a bit of a pipe dream and might still be (some forum members know I need regular kicks in the pants) but I think what plans I have could be slightly modified with the resurgence and growth in popularity of 15mm fantasy, and also 6mm with the likes of Microworld's offerings.

So basically, which of the three would you go for, or would like to see more of?

10mm. I know there are a fair few around, but I think 10mm are a good scale for fantasy at a battle-level. Would be nice to see a human range which isn't basically a medieval range too. I know the thing with human forces for fantasy is that one can basically buy historical figures and paint them for fantasy, but I'd quite like to see a non-'medieval' human range (which also didn't replicated the Empire from WH/Warmaster) - maybe something renaissance-ish. 'Gunpowder fantasy' I think is what I'm thinking of...

I voted 6 mm because I have them (Baccus.)

As I shift from 25 to 15 mm for many post retirement armies the one I know won't change is strangely enough (or maybe not) my Der Kriegspieler (supplemented by 1970s Ral Partha for the Dwarves) Dwarves/Goblins/Elves and same time frame Gnomes/ Halflings.

Fantasy I am "dual scaled" in armies.   ;)  Would that make me Bi-Scale-able?  lol

If I didn't have so many DK armies I would really have to consider 15 mm though.

Gracias,

Glenn

I think 15 is the way to go, it gives you the most options with other ranges.
I am looking for the following Deadlands minis:  Shotgun Thug, Lost Soul, Cleaners, Railroad Workers & Feral Dead. If you have any of these minis, or if you are one, please send me a PM.

For massbattle, 10mm is nice, good details (sometimes as good as 15mm) and fair price.

For skirmish and big skirmish, 15mm is a good balance between price and details (depanding the sculpt quality).

I second that though I am using 10mm for skirmish/dungeon crawl too.
I don\'t know whether to be a good example or a horrible warning.

I went with 15mm.  I haven't gotten into a smaller scale, but the new 15mm miniatures out there (Copplestone and Khurasan) have been extremely tempting.

I must say 15mm does it for me you can have large battles on a 6 x 4 .the 3' rule works well and there is a lot of Good manufactures now and the price aint  bad  compare them 28mm ...10mm would be a good shout BUT gaming in 15mm I can use a lot of my 15mm historical stuff and terrain so its a no brainer for me .

Happy gaming LR

15mm. I already have a load of Copplestone and Splintered light and I plan to place an order soon with Khurasan, so stuff that mixes well with those would be great. As others have mentioned I can use them for skirmish games or larger battles.

I've decided to go with 10mm because I was looking for particular minis and wasn't looking to hunt around for multiple packs.

I've always liked 28mm, but 15mm seems detailed enough and small enough.

The 10mm takes some time to get used to, but I've found the terrain easy to store and paint.

If I were to start down that slippery slope leading to certain damnation and an abrupt end at the racks of the inquisition, I'd probably go with 15 mm.

The quality and detail is decent on several ranges, now, and I recently experienced Gods of Battle played in 15 mm, which gives a whole other sense of a large fight, while still maintaining the individual characteristics of each mini.
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Just if it's of any interest (and to drum up one or two more votes!) you can see the initial clatter of sketches I came up with a couple of years ago, here. ;)

Most need revisited now, especially the elves. After seeing Gondnormians here and being prompted to pick up the ME bestiary, I'm tempted to shelve the 'high' and 'dark' elves, and scribble some more Dark-Agey wood elves.

I would certainly be interested in seeing you try your hand at 15mm.

6mm. It gives you the benefit of having large scale battles and using huge battle beasts and war engines. As we have seen the 6mm can also have very good details if the sculptor knows what he is doing :)

15mm by far the best scale, big armies, big battles and still get detailed lovely looking models!
