Pacific Rim project [upd. 21.7.]
« on: January 05, 2014, 12:40:42 PM »
I loved Pacific Rim. So much, in fact, that I'm starting a new project! As LAF tends to be a great source of inspiration, I'm turning to you for help. Pacific Rim has a very distinct style, and I'm not looking to duplicate it 1:1. For me it's more important to capture the feel, not to create a full replication.

For the Jaegers I'll go with Reaper's CAV and Battletech, setting the size of the Jaegers at around 50mm. Like this:

The Kaiju are more problematic. I'll probably get a few of the Clix ones:

The rest are posing a challenge. They'd need to be around 50mm, and not too recognizable. This rules out most of the traditional fantasy and Cthulhu monster stock. Reaper's Stone Elemental can probably be painted up nicely enough (and as I said, I'm definitely no purist):

And this Hordes monster looks to be perfect:

Any suggestions? 50mm or so, suitably alien, bipedal-ish, aquatic look a bonus but not required.

I wondered about those, but the players are too familiar with 40K. Valid suggestion though!

There are quite a few critters in the monsterpocalypse game by privateer press that might just fit your bill.

Any game system you have in mind yet? I have been slowly chipping away at monsters and mech's for Ganesha games Might monsters and robot samurai rules.

Bandai's Ultra monster series?
http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljlist?SeriesID=3560

Might be a bit too big as most seem to be about 18 cm

there's also stuff like this:

and this:

I think there's probably lot's of toys out there based on the traditional Kaiju, most of them are probably Japanese though

I had a look at the Monsterpocalypse stuff, but they're a bit too cartoonish for my taste. I love the Ganesha Games basic mechanics, so the first thing I did was buy those exact same rules :)

Love this idea...I have been playing around with the same thing using Mecha figures from the old rafm Mekton range and a bunch of weird plastic Gashepon figures from the Ultraman series which I bought on a trip to Japan some years back.

Using the Giant Monster Rampage rules.  I reckon on a scale about 1/600 (3mm).

What are you doing for city block scenery?

Thanks for the tip! This one based on the American version of Godzilla is just about perfect:

Approx. 2 inches, should be fine once cleaned up and repainted.

I decided that I'll save a bunch of money and just use printed scenery. Found loads of Battletech stuff here: http://sarna.net/files/media/cardstock/

GINO, god I hated him, but it all was sort of worth it once you see him getting a beating in Final Wars  ;)

I had a second look at the Koralon, and this guy especially might be fine:
