Wild West Exodus
« on: January 05, 2014, 07:43:13 PM »
Hi Lads....2013 was for me a very good year for Kickstarters and opened up quite a few possiblities for Wild West gaming....first Deadmans Hand and now Wild West Exodus a Wild West/Steampunk extravaganza!....the WWX miniatures are probably the best on the market and do paint up very nicely....now its time for yet another new game at the Sheffield and Rotherham club (GIMPS)

here's a few pics of a few paint jobs....

Very cool, I've been wanting to take a look at these, nice paintwork.

How do the 'normal' WWX troops compare to the Deadmans Hand figures?
So many projects..... so little time.......

While I'm not overly intrigued by the genre, the brushwork is marvelous.  The sculpts almost have a Rackham feel to them...very cool.

WWX is 35mm Scaled - this Chart may help.

^Unfortunately the 35mm scale is something that absolutely removed any interest from me when they announced it.  I can't think of a more phenomenally stupid business move than making a game in a scale just out of touch with every other manufacturer in business.  Really a gigantically stupid business decision (in my humble opinion).  Luckily I'm not interested in the game anyway...thankfully.

 lol

Thanks. Wow, I knew they'd gone big, I didn't realise it was that big! Shame as there are some lovely sculpts in there. The not Firefly crew look great but no use at that size.

I had the exact same thoughts when I got pointed to the kickstarter

I actually went "in" on the Kickstarter, and was more than happy with the miniatures - realistically scaled, and not a big head or sausage finger in sight!

No one's commenting on the quality of the end product - I'm sure they're quite good.  Just the business idiocy that we see in a lot of companies (and not just gaming companies): making a proprietary product.  I'd say it's safe to say that 80-90% of all Old West gamers play in 25-28mm.  So that means a large portion of your target audience probably has terrain for...25-28mm.  Why in the world would you intentionally sell figures 10% bigger?  :D (or why not go straight to 40mm - another relatively common scale?)

I know they want to push their own terrain etc. but it just seems silly to me.  A huge portion of my consideration for any new product is "how much of my stuff can I use with it".  :?

What he said.
I could have been interested but the size is a killer for me.

I don't see the scale as much of an issue really - its a brand new setting for a start, its more Bravestarr/Firefly than standard "Old West" to be frank - so to "cross pollinate" miniatures from other ranges to and from WWX would require a hell of a lot of conversion work and vice versa (the "look" of WWX is quite unique really) - some of the Laser Cut Buildings out there atm, have large enough doorways/windows to be used happily with WWX - so no biggy there either.

35mm scaling is actually not uncommon now - The Batman Miniatures Game, Kingdom Death, and the Enigma miniatures 35mm line spirng to mind - so I don't see it as a huge thing personally.

Its a great game, the rules and the miniatures are solid - I see a bright future for it personally.
