French troops in the African Theatres
« on: January 09, 2014, 03:48:56 PM »
Does anyone have any photos, pics or uniforms details of the French soldiers fighting in Africa during WW1, particulary the early war campaigns?

The French fought mainly in Kamerun and togoland, using native troops like the Senegalese. here is a few pictures, the one in the Adrian helmet is for the western front.

Juergen,

Thanks for the photos, I checked out "Black and White in Color".  It's pretty much spot on for the sort of games I'm thinking about.

I don't suppose you know if the Zouave style uniform persisted in Africa longer than on the Western front?

This is a great topic, espeically since I have been interested in the Great War in West Africa.  With the French utilizing Tirrailleurs in West Africa, is there any evidence that Foreign Legion troops participated in this theater as well, or due to the international makeup of the Legion steered clear?

What would the French themselves have looked like? Late or early war uniforms or even pith helmets?

Tirailleur senegalais had tight pants by then.
the colonial troops wore khaki with pith helmets occasionally, or calot (c*** cap)

French troops in west africa were sengalese tirailleurs (photo one is the right uniforme the other are from the european or gallipoli front) or "toupes coloniales" (white men)  . They were light khaky drill dress with pith helmet (see artizan FFL range MOD 031  032 033 034 for "troupes coloniales" and MOD 080 for senegalese).

FFL were not use in western africa, they were all for the european or  morrocan front (except one bataillon in gallipoli) !

best regards
paco

Seems like you could actually get away with using the Copplestone Colonial German Officers for some of those French officers! The uniforms are very very similar:
