Is there a Saga variant for WHFB?
« on: January 12, 2014, 12:45:44 PM »
Hi guys

I just wondered if anyone knew of a WHFB Saga variant. A pal has a lot of WHFB kit and we're looking for an alternative system, I can't stand 'big battle' WH and only have a few 'old-Hammer' miniatures - I thought a Saga variant might be the answer?

Cheers

You don`t really need a specific variant to play Saga with Fantasy Minis. Just select the battleboards that feel right, for example use the viking battleboard for orks and the Breton battleboard for, well, Bretonnians and you are ready to go.

Are you stuck on Saga or just looking for some little skirmish/warband scrum? I wonder if the old sixth ed skirmish appendix rules or mordheim would suit. Just use the same stats. ;) Dunno where you'd get the latter besides scribd, but IIRC they're mordheim-lite anyway, and that should be easy to dig up online with all sorts of LRBs and faction lists.

The rules are FOC (bar from print costs) from GW themselves http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=cat480008a&categoryId=6700006a&section=&aId=21500021a

BUT have a look at http://www.coreheim.com to fix some issues with the original game balance and finding rules.

Ha, sorry!  I meant to say the former, not the latter! ;D The skirmish rules that were in the back of the sixth ed book.

Cheers for the responses guys!

I already have Mordheim. I was hoping for a clear move away from GW game mechanics for a change, frankly I'm a bit tired of the whole 'roll to hit, roll to wound, roll to save' malarkey!

I don't really know enough about Saga to do the 'clone' idea suggested - I was being lazy and hoping that someone had already done the work for me!

I might take a look at 'Song of Blades' as another possible system.

Sounds good. Song of blades is a great system. Plus, you need even fewer minis than for Saga.

There are enough battle boards for SAGA that you can just pick a couple and use them as 'counts-as' list easily enough.  The variation between armies in SAGA comes not from the troops themselves, but from their abilities.  Each faction has access to a warlord, elite troops, regular troops, and levy/peasant troops which are all more or less the same.  Its their combined special abilities that sets them apart.

There have been some SAGA battle boards made for Lord of the Rings you could try... they were posted on here a while ago.  The main challenge with SAGA is that, to my knowledge, there has been no way to integrate a wizard into your battles.

Skink - ah, lack of numbers is a bit of a disadvantage really! 6pt Saga size games were roughly what we were looking for! Can you play SBH with bigger forces?

Timbor - yeah I was rather hoping that maybe someone had 'fantasied' up Saga for the most common 28mm gaming ranges!

I had a quick look at Dredskull but it seems to be in development hiatus at the moment! Can anyone suggest another system? I wondered if maybe 7TV's Seventh Voyage might do the trick?

You can play it with a larger force, but the rules are written for a skirmish level, so large-scale battles tend to get a bit bogged down. I guess I wouldn`t recommend it then.

(Anyone know about Saga for Hoplite-era warfare?)

I'm going to use GW's LotR SBG rules.  You'll need around 20-40 models depending on what army you'll use.  There was an online unit calculator but it seems to be defunct.
