Searching for Humboldt/Maturin'esque miniature
« on: June 09, 2008, 09:20:38 AM »
Hello all,
As always I'm pretty sure someone from this forum can help me out with strange miniatures. Today I'm searching for a figure representing a scientist/explorer in Napoleonic era/early 19th century clothing. Maybe someone remembers the paintings of Humboldt in the South American rain forest - or Paul Bettany as Dr Maturin exploring the Galapagos Islands.
Explicitly I'm not after a 'martial' doctor type like the one by Black Cat Bases. A simple civilian figure, preferably with glasses and/or a straw hat in a long robe would be fantastic.
Any suggestions?

Great Idea! Maybe one of the Foundry napoleonic british seamen could be converted?

I seem to recall there being something suitable in Old Glory's Island Goveror and assistants pack, but it has been a while since I looked at it. http://www.oldglory25s.com/view_product.php?product=OGP-20 Note that the picture does not show all of the figures in the pack.

Slightly better picture:

A couple there that might fit, especially the two in the bottom left corner. Pic from the Old Glory website.

Poli, sadly I'm not that good at converting miniatures without massive damage. It's not possible for me to substitute the weaponry with something more 'civilian'. Or any simple ideas?

Aaron & Jolly Bob, we're aiming in the same direction, although the OG figs are clearly 'dressed up' for service. Not very suitable for a walk in the jungle or the Spanish beach... lol
At first I was looking at the Proctor by Artizan, too. But he's on the other extreme: too lavishly clothed.

As a reminder, what I'm after:

Humboldt

Maturin/Bettany (n.b. the headdress and high collar)

Presumably there are no such figures, but perhaps some who can be more easily (!) converted (as said above, my abilities are limited).

Try some of the Foundry C18th civilian packs they may have one or two suitable.

Thanks, Malamute - sometimes you won't see the wood for the trees. Think I got it:

Except for that, any further suggestions are welcome - 'cause the Foundry minis are Baker-crap.  >:(

If you could get a dismounted figure of Picton... Front Rank has one monted.
Back to the Foundrys: BI40 Naval landing Party has the mini I had in mind (couldn't get access to Foundrys site at work). It's the chap with straw hat, pistol & Sabre. Cut of the sqabre and replace it with a piece of rod, and you have a walking stick (though a noble one). The other hand I'd just cut off and replace with an empty one (e.g. from a GW militia sprue). You might even place a bird or a butterfly on it. Butterflys are easy, just cut them out of paper.

Edit: That civilian pack is just right! Maybe just cut of that ponytail.
