Lost World Big Game Hunt, first steps....
« on: June 10, 2008, 11:04:10 PM »
Had a nice sit down at my painting desk tonight (which I don't do nearly often enough lately...).
I've been having VSF/Colonial on the brain recently, as a result of which Wayswatcher gave me a Disney's Atlantis drilling machine and a plastic dino (probably in an attempt to shut me up... ;) )
I'm still deciding what to do with the drilling machine, but I cleaned and based the dinosaur yesterday night, and started painting tonight:

On this side you can still see the scars on the tail and leg, where I had to remove the cast-on lettering (copyrights, and "made in X", the usual...) and where I tried to cover up a magnet embedded in his shoulder (sculpting over a magnet with ferrous metal sculpting tools is a unique experience, not neccessarily a pleasant one...)
Because of the relatively soft plastic I couldn't quite get it as neat as I had hoped for.

And the other side of the brute:

To give some idea of size: the base he sits on is 50mm in diameter....

And a topside view of his colour pattern:

So, now I've almost got a nice specimen of Lost World big game, time to start searching for jungle plants and prey, erm, "hunters"....
Hopefully in time, I'll have the kit to do some small scale skirmishes in a "Explorers" or "Big game Hunt" theme. Maybe I'll eventually make some extra sets of "natives" and "Big game" so I can muck about in Darkest Africa and on Venus as well...

Bye, Modhail

Good work.

I suppose even if you placed a big red arrow next to the 'scar' it isn't noticable from the pics.

Even now I'm not so sure where the reworked area might be located.

Tha's really good. Heh. ;)

Thanks!
I guess it's just twice as obvious to myself, just because I know exactly where to look.... ::) Looking back at the pictures now, a day later, it isn't quite a jarring.

Bye, Erik

We're always our own worst critics, aren't we?

Great dinosaur - I need to find some raptorish things to chase foolhardy adventurers and/or cavemen down!

That's really cool, good job with the alterations, and I like the colourscheme too.  :)

A nice looking dino, you'll have lots of fun sending in the cannon fodder, sorry hunters, to the newly discovered lands.

Thanks!

I finished the dinosaur's base yesterday. (Yeah, I know, took me long enough...)
Once everything had dried I couldn't help having some fun with it.   :D

First a size comparison to a 28mm figure:

And some action shots:

Swat team sent in to retrieve a runaway science project. But who's hunting who?

Andreo Bizzaro and his men biting off more than they can chew, somewhere in the woods of some exotic island.

A Daimyo confronting the demon-lizard that has been eating his peasants. (and thus threatening rice production!)

Looks very nice!

The scarring is indeed very hard to spot, I could only see it because you mentioned it. He looks pretty mean though!

Looks like you are going to do quite some pulpy like games :D

He looks like he's quite a friendly chap. He's even let the nice Trooper stroke his paw. Aw, ain't he cute  lol

Lovely model, he's turned out very well and shows what great results you can get with plastics  :-*

I picked up a plastic T-Rex made by a German company which I'll be using for my "The Land that Time Forgot" game.

Good price for the model and just needs basing!
Best wishes,
Helen

Wow looks nice..

I take it you just base coated it and then used a wash to get the main colour..

Become who you really are... [/i]

Nope, black primer and then a series of drybrushes with increasingly lighter shades of brown. I then took the belly and throat several shades lighter with more drybrushing. The mottling on his back was done with paint-based glazes (paint+glaze medium+a tiny amount of water), the very darkest spots are just brown ink.
