Proxies for Riders of Rohan?
« on: January 24, 2014, 07:20:33 AM »
Originally I was going to use Musketeer Saxon cavalry, however they don't really suit what's in my minds eye and they'll probably end up as Gepids in my Hun army. Conquest Games Normans are an option, again not entirely how I picture the Rohirrim to look.
I was thinking of using the GW figures, though the ones I want have proved difficult to get.So  I am seeking alternatives and suggestions from you learned fellows :)

Cheers

Guy

For what it's worth the old Der Kriegspieler Rohirrim look like Normand knights at Hastings though with round shields.
Given that the Rohirrim are a Indo-European 'horse culture' of Dark Ages level minis of historical Alans or Ostrogoths are probably the most appropriate?

Maybe a mix of manufacturers and when I say that I mean converting plastics (or even metals) to get the look you're after, head swaps, shield swaps etc.

Guy: I agree with James on this one.

Maybe start with the GW or Gripping Beast plastics and convert away from there.

That is the way my Army of the Dead are going to be done.

If you need any of the various plastic parts/sprues give me a shout, I have a fair few now.
 :D

By the way: When do we start?
 ;)

Have you tried Musketeer's Late Romans, i.e. the Heavy Cavalry?

I'd probably mix Conquest normans with bits from Gripping Beast vikings or saxons. Might consider throwing in some mounted men-at-arms bits from Fireforge games too.

I'd go for Tanatus Miniatures:

If I remember correctly then the ones from the films are based on a mixture of Viking and Frank styles. I've at least heard of someone retro converting GWs Rohirrm to Dark Ages Franks. That might be worth a try having a look around and seeing if anything turns up.

I'm considering Crusader Saxon cavalry for this.

I've done Goths using various Crusader dark ages spearmen converted with West Wind arthurian separate heads. The same might work with the cavalry. The only problem are the horses. the Ebob arabian horses look too big for the 4th/5th century for my taste.

The Professor himself described his Rohirrim as based on Saxons from the Bayeux Tapestry, IIRC.

Haven't read the silly books, so my only images are from the films.
But, I had some thought about cutting the Gripping Beast saxons in half and glue the Fireforge mongol legs onto them (and the proper horses of course). I've always liked the silly small ponies after all :)

If I remember correctly then the ones from the films are based on a mixture of Viking and Frank styles.

If I remebmber the extra-material correctly, they are mostly based on dark age saxons, with horses added.
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!
