IHMN origins and family tree
« on: January 26, 2014, 10:33:40 AM »
Before In Her Majesty's Name I had been writing and publishing a range of wargames and roleplaying games rules for several years. Some were to disappear without trace in all the hurly-burly but several really did quite well.
Over those years I set up a couple of blogs dedicated to these games:
The first was The Games Shed, also known as Gawd 'Elp Us Games. This mostly hosted my wargames rules including Forge of War and the FUBAR series of one page wargames rules. This became pretty successful with thousands of downloads and soon I had a metric tonne of contributors and collaborators, all of whom are credited in the various rule sets they helped develop. http://thegamesshed.wordpress.com/
The second, Dead Simple RPG, is a blog dedicated to my Dead Simple, one page roleplaying games system. With over a dozen genres covered it has had many thousands of downloads. I'm currently running the Blaster! SF RPG with my local games group, so it is alive and kicking. http://deadsimplerpg.wordpress.com/
The last blog is not mine. As some of you may know, the forerunner to IHMN was ItEN or In the Emperor's Name. This was a set of W40K skirmish rules that filled a niche GW were basically ignoring and was pretty successful. So much so it went into a second edition before Osprey came across it and offered me the opportunity to write IHMN.
After that I did not have time to further develop it so my friend Gavin stepped in and became the Editor-in-chief for the third edition. You can find his work here: http://iten-game.org/. It should be noted that ItEN developed along a slightly different path to IHMN and has become a very successful W40K game played by many people across the globe. if you like W40K then I recommend you look this up.

Just curious, but did you ever consider using metric measurements?

I was born in 1959 and spent most of my childhood in RAF schools abroad, so the metric system sort of passed me by...  lol

Besides - Imperial measurements are very in-theme for the imperialistic Victorian age, and the imperialistic 40K universe.  Plus 40k is very big in the USA and they are still living in their own world of imperial measurements.

Just so.  We jingoistic Americans find that metrics has too much of a "European accent" for our liking.  ;) :D

Most impressive corpus.

I’ve ordered my IHMN through my local games shop, pleased to know its pedigree.

On a more serious note. If you want to work in metric measurements then multiply all inches by 25mm  :D

It's been really cool to see the development from ItEN. Haven't played IHMN name yet, although I jumped on the rules right away :)

It is interesting to read about the progression.  I have enjoyed a couple of games of ItEN and have been eyeballing IHMN but I have so many projects that will never be finished.  I will always continue with FUBAR though.  Thanks for the history and the fine rulesets.

It's a bit sneaky; I have a measure that "reads" metric and US, a bit of switch-hitting doncha know. :)

I am truly pleased with the prospect of receiving my copy of IHMN.

Thinking about a Company of Scouts arranged around Robert Baden-Powell, Frederick Selous, and Frederick Russell Burnham.  Then a Serbian Syndicate involved in the 'matter of the universe'--just enough sauce for this post.

We shall all look forwards to these... now why didn't I think of Baden-Powell? [Kick self in the ass smiley]

The thing to remember about FUBAR, ItEN and many other of the wargames rules-sets you see there is that I may have dug the foundations but without the active collaboration of the Forge of War Developments team they would not be the games they are today.

They are a grand band of chaps!
