And that's okay. If I have to convert O to S track, that might not be the worst thing ever, just a bit of a pain. The loco is the only real problem there and given that I can take the motor out if I need to, it doesn't seem unsolvable. I use 1/48 vehicles myself, so O cars will work fine.

Hmmmm... possibilities. Too bad they don't have any European-style cars. Now I'm wondering if ANYONE makes them in s-scale?

You can get VERY EXPENSIVE parts to assemble your own British from here: http://www.s-scale.org.uk/main.htm
Or you can get cheap tinplate7plastic East German stuff from Ebay Germany if you look for Stadtilm Spur S

That 62C model is beautiful and is very close to the kind of thing I would aim for in my first loco (nice, mid-sized tank engine, perfect era of manufacture), though I'll have to go with black livery for the most part to keep it "global" (nobody else seemed to like coloured trains as much as the British, which is a shame!). Though I'm sure I don't want to know how much it costs!

That east German stuff would be perfect for cars! Thanks for letting me know about the search term - that'll be a big help!

The only problems You get is with colonial trains, because these are almost always narrow track
IMO colonial narrow gauge is a blessing. I see Michi's OO conversions; relatively inexpensive, and thematically appropriate, and I wish that 28mm continental stuff could be so straightforward.
