A quick look at the Australian War Memorial archives tells me they probably didn't:
https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C1279951
https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C173965

Yes, these are departure images of the NSW contingent to Sudan, but if you say the British didn't carry any colours, I doubt the colonial forces did either (but again, I note my complete lack of knowledge on this subject).

Thanks . I had seen one of those images before
Cheers

a new unit for the collection

I found a line drawing in my copy of Cassels War in the Sudan that showed a bengal lancer on a camel - and I suspect they would have tried this - so I thought why not make a little unit of them

so here they are

they are old school figures a marriage of Bengal Lancer and camels made by connoisseur sold by by Bicorne - just needed a bit of milliput work on saddle and pommel

And I dub thee "Crikey's" Camels.  As in, crikey, even more figures for an immense collection!  Now, is that immense in size or immense in spectacularness?  Up to individual choice.   :D

Excellent paintjob on the riders, but the camels also have a so natural color, congrats!

"One day the lead mountain will be gone.... one day"

I'm inspired to ask, what is the status of the lead mountain five years on along this thread?

I'm not convinced that such a unit existed (there is no mention of anything but horses in the two battles fought by the 9th BC), but damn if it isn't a great idea beautifully executed. Definitely worth doing, well done! I'd love to see the pic that gave you the idea, I've not seen that one.

I'd advise you to rein in the temptation to stat them as effective lancers, too. They weren't officially lancers at this point, but had been issued lances following the Brits' rough experiences against the Beja in the previous Suakin campaign. They had not however been trained how to use them effectively at this stage, and got severely dished up themselves. They did better in their second outing, though, adopting mounted infantry style tactics which were more successful.

Another little new unit is a rocket battery .
