I'm thinking of turning some into Cajuns :)
So many projects..... so little time.......

No problem, I keep hoping it'll be taken a little further in time and into the Second Boer War properly but it's not likely currently.

Look forward to seeing where you go with this...not sure I've ever seen a Boer War* game, now I come to think of it.

*I have been informed by an academic specialising in South African history that the common term these days is 'The South African War', the '(second) Boer War' being a little out of fashion, it would seem.
I told you so. You damned fools.

About trains.....

The board will feature a central railway line with a wooden bridge across a donga, guarded by a blockhouse.  A telegraph line will run alongside the track.  There'll also be a rocky, hilly area and some lower ground with long grass.

Given the importance of the train line to the terrain, I had to resolve the source of the track, and to resolve that I had to decide on the train.

With a board of only 90cm by 90cm, there isn't room for a full armoured train, so I've settled on an undoubtedly fictitious but wargaming practical variation that will enable me to bring a train onto the board for track and telegraph repairs and blockhouse garrison reinforcement and resupply.

For the loco I am going for one of these

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland_Railway_2441_Class

No idea if they served in South Africa but a smaller loco with a wagon to front and rear will give me a train of I think about 35cm length.

This will be assembled using Hornby 00 stock but utilising the widening techniques developed by Michi and shown here:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=13533.0

To get me started I've purchased (but have yet to receive) a faulty Hornby 0-6-0 jinty, which though a later build has fundamentally the same body shape.  I shan't be using power but do want to be able to push it along the tracks, hence the hornby track.

As is often mentioned in the railway wargaming board, for 1/56 the hornby track is too narrow, at I think 16mm rather than 26mm but I am content to accept that.  I shall probably make a similar compromise on the footprint of the blockhouse.

Next steps then are to purchase the track and cork for the donga/hill, and have B&Q cut me the nine 30cm sq tiles.

Why James, are you suggesting that there are too many words and not enough images ?!  :D

So, your pipe, stuff, this in lol

We had the 1/1 builders in last week, which really disrupted practical progression of ALL my projects but I plan some boers of my own to - best as I can - complement the perry Mafeking civilians that are in the post. Have made a bit of progress with 4 heads and the m95 Mauser....

All wip of course

The pancakes at the back will become floppy hats for the Boers and the Brits

Not a range as such but range fillers.  :D

I hope that one day the Perry's will expand their Mafeking range but then is not now and I want to do this now!  So I am attempting some multipart Boers of my own, both riding and standing, and if they are of commercial quality then they will of course go into the store. Same for the Empire light horse, though the scots garrison mentioned above will be a cut and shut from the Sudan range.   ;)

You'll find these chaps, who were mentioned earlier, are much closer to 2nd Anglo-Boer War than the Sudan figures; these will only need relatively minor work: http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/colonial/north-west-frontier/north-west-frontier-best-sellers-collection-bcnw001/

Thanks  :)

You're referencing the Scots, right?  I could easily be missing detail as it's not a period I'm well versed in but I'm only intending to use the Scots from below the waist, as I want the upper bodies to have bandoliers and slouch hats (like in the blockhouse photo).  If it's the Foundry Scots then I'd still need to lose the personal equipment, add bandoliers and swap out pith for slouch.  Is there some other detail I'm not picking up on?  :) ??? :)
