Foamboard "Tartane" for Barbary Corsairs
« on: July 14, 2008, 05:08:40 AM »
Hi all,
As promised the "Dervish", my attempt at a small Barbary Corsair ship for LotHS. She is totally scratch built with a similar hull pattern to my sloop, but features a stern castle.
Her design was influenced by Mediterranean tartanes and feluccas, because no real reference for small Barbary ships could be found  - but I think it gives the desired effect of a Corsair ship. Her mast and lateen rigging is removable for ease of play and proved a little less stressful then the sloops - but I'll put that down to experience now. She is the prototype for a xebec - the ship I initially intended to build. Comments and criticisms more than welcome.

Here is the terrible Corsair, Faruq Reis and some of his crew.

Hi FS,

Amazing job! I love your use of bead work accents to give it that ultra-detailled look.

The anchor looks like a treble fishing hook, to me... hope you blunted those points!  I've had those stuck in me before, and that's not fun!

Very nice! I have a xebec / chebec / jabec on the drawing board also. You might find this site useful. It had a wealth of pictures as well as some nice plans and a paper model kit! http://carnet-escale.chez-alice.fr/Traditions/Vieux_Greements/chebec/chebec.htm

Thanks for the encouraging words.  :)

It is an "eagle claw" style fish hook, filed down (nasty little B) and painted black. I've seen alot of pictures featuring a four pronged anchor - but couldn't find one. They would make great grapple lines as well if you used smaller hooks.

Don't forget - unfortunately the crew are not painted by myself.
