btw, Keith, I'm currently reading the Osprey Parthians book and wonder if you guys are going to make some infantry for the range? Aparently they had some good infantry like hillmen and some of different quality comprising of peasants. I know the strength of a Parthian army wasn't in their infantry but it would be great to have this option as well.

Hi Prof

We did consider this but they are fairly generic, in other words, there are a lot of figures out there that will cover the requirements and they don't see the table much IMHO.

Short answer no infantry for the Late Parthians, we have discussed Sassanid infantry and I think they will appear in the form of walking levy without the big domed hats, at least that was the tone of the discussion.

Cheers

I'm not sure, maybe I've missed something, but in my opinion we don't really have much nice figures out there for possible using as generic Asiatic infantry. Like said, maybe I'm missing something, so let me know. Apart from Gripping Beast and A&A Sassanid infantry I only know Crusader Persians and they don't really have much variety in poses and clothes. There are some Warlord and older Foundry figures but I'm not that crazy about them.

Good idea to make some Sassanid infantry without the hats, perhaps they could be the sort of generic stuff that we could use for anything.

If I may interject Prof., perhaps you already answered your needs and may I humbly suggest you take a second look at the Crusader Persians. The variety in posing is sufficient for these troops IMHO as how much different poses do you really need for their role? The figures themselves match up great with Aventine and they really look the part for Parthians and dare I say even alternative Sassanid Levy.

For sure when I get around to doing my Parthians/Sassanids they will be an option.

I hope this helps a little. :)

Christopher, I would like to have more visual variety and more options. The spearmen are made using the same dolly with different heads. I don't need 20-30 of single models for a spearmen regiment but having them less static and a bit more individual would be nice. I know, that's me, you maybe don't need them for their role. I just need my good looking figures to be happy. Everything made with the same dolly doesn't make me happy :)  Also they have no slingers, no irregular peasants infantry with javelins. There are so many possibilities there..

Certainly the beginning of a great range. :-*

I am a fan of the idea of generic infantry. Many years ago I was involved in discussion of starting a miniatures company. One of the things we wanted to do was produce a range of multi-purpose figures. For example, a figure wearing tunic and trousers could be the basis for many foot types from 1000 BC to 1000 AD. The plan was to make separate heads and shields (and possibly hand weapons), but a common basic body. One pack would have a series of static poses for close order foot and one pack would be more active for warbands and skirmishers. I suppose this is being done with plastics, but I haven't seen anyone take the idea to it's logical conclusion. And there isn't any reason it couldn't be done with metals.

So the same basic infantry body could be used for Persians, Celts, Germans, and  Saxons - only the extra equipment and heads would be unique. I recognize there may be some differences between the peoples I have mentioned, but the ides is to keep the design as basic as possible. Command packs could be added latter to fill out more national differences.

Here are the two new packs of light horse archers. They are a mix of 2 part bodies and single part bodies, 5 of the 6 have separate heads, each pack comes with 5 different heads and loads of spare quivers.

Another view showing the headband.

More packs next week.

Keith, they're awesome, though I guess the guy on the left is a two-part one? His body looks a bit odd, warped in some way :)

Will there be more of them? And an unit deal as well?
