Crossroads at Peresadovka - Battlegroup Barbarossa AAR
« on: February 27, 2014, 01:27:25 AM »

To wet the head of Ruardhi's new 20mm Hungarian Army he has done for Battle Barbarossa we fought a little encounter battle against my Soviets. We played at 350 points as I really enjoy these sized games as they give you alot to think about with few forces to do everything. But this one took us both by surprise as to what a tense and exciting game it was, and one that ended with a bit of a surprise, but all the while 'felt' right for the period.

The initiative passed started with the Soviets who pushed forward with some light tanks. These T37s rampaged forward like armoured sewing machines in a blaze of glory and were soon both knocked out by the Hungarian 37mm anti-tank gun, which did some fine shooting. Both sides went a little cagey here, but the Soviets with some lucky reinforcement rolls piled onto the table... Led by the huge T35 they surged forward and then the chaos of the Soviet command set in and things just stopped moving, though the mortar teams kept up fire, though it was largely ineffective until a 120mm round landed on a rather over excited Forward Observers staff car as he raced too far forward...

The Hungarians were also hampered by poor command rolls and had trouble shaking out their troops in a decent battle line, the harrassing mortar fire not helping at all. Then things changed. A very lucky brace of Hungarian mortar rounds struck the T28 with the result that the crew decided to abandone it! They will be shot for cowardice when I find them. This left the Soviets pinned in the centre, with Hungarian Pre-Registered Target Points either side of them, and one remaining tank that was blazing away with its ammo at a lone Toldi tank that it just couldnt hit. The Hungarians now got some decent command dice and pushed forwards. Soon they threatened the Soviets from both flanks and rushed into the small hamlet, while supporting mortar fire pinned down the Soviet infantry as they tried to advance to gain the cover of the buildings. To make things worse the Hungarians drew three 'Air Attack' chits and a couple of passing Fiat fighters did a few very poor strafing runs!

It then became a close range bloodbath in a brutal struggle for the hamlet and the crossroads. First a Hungarian unit tried to assault the Soviet Maxim team setting up in the large house, only to be cut down on the road as they tried to cross. In return the Toldi provided long range suppressing fire to pin down the Maxim crew, and the Hungarians brought up more men. To counter them the Soviets rushed their remaining men forward in a desperate gamble to get forward and into range. Hungarian MG fire cut down Soviet riflemen as they came forward. The battle looked to be over, just a matter of time till the Hungarians killed enough Soviets to force them to break.

But they didnt. Then one event changed things. The hard pressed Maxim team, still somehow alive passed a morale test and got a 'Call of Duty' result. They opened up a blistering fire, getting two sets of Aimed Fire. They blased away with four bursts of fire down the Hungarian line, cutting the khaki clad soldiers down. One after another, Hungarian soldiers fell and soon the hedgerow was littered with the dead and wounded. Four Hungarian units ceased to be effective fighting units after this blistering heroic fire. But they didnt get it all there own way...

Some Hungarians hunkered down in the other building fought off a ferocious hand-to-hand assault, wiping out the Soviet unit in the process. It was now touch and go for both sides as all along the line troops opened up at anything that moved, but neither side seemed able to mass enough fire to cause a unit to be destroyed.

Then the Toldi spotted a gap. The Hungarian light tank raced forwards, crashing through the fence and onto the road. It pinned down a Soviet unit in the open, ready to cut them to ribbons with its next burst of fire. But of course, unknown to the Toldi crew they had raced up and park on the so far unused Soviet Pre-Registered Target Point, placed to secure their flank. In came a crashing barrage of mortar bombs, and one of course got lucky and hit the Toldi. Its light armour didnt withstand the 120mm HE round and the vehicle brewed up. The chit taken for this lost unit put the Hungarians one point over their Battle Rating... The Soviets had won a victory! But only by the skin of their teeth. The final scores were;

Hungarians: 22 BR taken out of Army Rating of 21
Soviets: 20 BR taken out of Army Rating of 21

So one point in it, but to add insult to the poor Hungarians, their last two chits drawn were '5's!

The T-35 is one of my favourite (awful) tanks!  They recently got the last remaining one up and running under it's own power - to be refinished/fixed and put on display.  Seeing one roll around on video was pretty awesome!
