Painting black hair?
« on: February 27, 2014, 02:22:40 AM »
I'm painting some 28mm Native Americans and want to step up my game, so to speak.

How do you add highlights to black hair? Any suggestions or techniques? I know to look good it would have to match the painter's style. So here's a look at how I do up my native Americans...

I usually go for a base of black and then highlight with a very dark brown, though I have used a black/dark grey mix at times

You can also highlight using blue, but don't overdo it. You might need to push it towards white to really give the impression of black hair.

I have used flesh to give a hihglight, works better for clothes than hair and you have ot be very careful as it starts to have an olive look to it if over done.  I have also tried gloss black for highlights in the past. Not tried blue but could see it working well certainly fo r that groomed look

I used to highlight brown which always turned out to look like (admittedly dark) brown hair. Then I tried grey for a while which always looked "old".
Now I achieve satisfying results with pale blue. The trick is not to use a too rich blue (you can still add white), to get a blueish grey that looks like reflections of the sky.
