Colours for the SUDAN CAMPAIGN
« on: February 28, 2014, 04:57:12 PM »
Hi.  I've bought some Armies in Plastic figures from Tiger Miniatures nd would like to paint them.  I've got some Khaki paint from Vallejo, but wondered if this is the correct colour, as when I look at illustrations in books (Osprey, etc) the colours always look sand coloured, not Khaki.

Can someone help please and suggest which colours I should use.

Thanks.  DaveL

I can't speak to particular Vallejo shades but you really do want to be looking for paint that is something like the colour of sand. The word khaki has been used to describe much darker brown and even green uniforms since (which makes it quite a useless term on its own as it can describe such a wide variety of shades). But in a Victorian British Army context the word Khaki generally refers to sandy-coloured uniforms. In fact throughout the 20th Century the colour of British Army Desert uniforms was called "Khaki Drill." Can be rather confusing when the same word is used to describe the greenish-brown serge unforms worn in other theatres.

Edit: Of course, it is also complicated by the fact that some of the uniforms worn in the Sudan were grey.  :)

Hi DaveL,

This article by Michael Perry:http://www.perry-miniatures.com/pages.php?page=sudan-uniform-guide is a great reference for British in the Sudan.

For what it's worth, I'm painting 28mm Perry British, and I'm using Vallejo Khaki for the "Indian Service Dress" troops that I have in-progress.

Cheers
