Big Spaceships
« on: June 25, 2008, 03:57:21 AM »
Hey guys I'm looking for some larger spacship model kits, paper models, or toys and such for my Serenity RPG.  I'm mostly looking for obscure ships and scale isn't really an issue because I can usually convert any space ship to look good with 28mm miniatures especially if it's large enough.

I've got a paper model of Serenity somewhere, I can send you it if you like? ;)

Many years ago, Halcyon brought out a vinyl-and-styrene kit of the Nostromo from Alien.

The kit is a beauty and really large. All it would lack would be a decent 28mm cockpit and You are done.

I remember it was very expensive when it came out, around € 150,-, but I found one at Crisis for €30,-.
Naturally, I bought it for € 150,- when it came out and have it lying in my basement since then...  >:(
Nevertheless, it is a great kit.

Currently, there is one on ebay:

Look up water/dart guns. There are alot of nice ones out there with nice sizes, shapes, and proportions that could convert up pretty easily.

A project for when I can get around to it, is doing just that.

Revell used to make some fairly large kits of "Perry Rodan" spaceships.

Airfix had a model of the "Orion" space transport that was quite large, and I think I saw it just lasty year, so it's either been re-released or released by someone else.

Was there a firm called "Glenco" or similar that specialised in odd space kits ?

You might be able to cannibalise bits of Star Wars toys (or even better the cheap almost lookalikes that you find in some discount stores) or something like Power Rangers etc - some just need a respray to make them look totally different.

I assume you're aware of Ebbles Miniatures PDFs. If not, he does some that aren't exactly large, but might work for you:

http://www.ebblesminiatures.com/shop/2005models.php

"T/A-133 Gyrfalcon"  might do for a Government patrop ship and
"UD-41 Dropship"  as a generic commercial type.

There are some card B5 models here:

http://dpileggispicks.com/models.html

I haven't seen them , so don't know what scale they are, but again, they might work.

There are a whole s***load of links to card sci-fi stuff in the next link. Again, I haven't looked at most of these, so you'd have to do the spadework yourself, but there are some that look promising:

Finally there are a couple of YahooGroups which have card models to download:

Hopefully there will be enough there to keep your good lady occupied   ;)

I think World Works Games (IIRC) had a couple of nice paper spaceships in 28mm scale.

Take a look around here:

Wow!
They've got a Blake's Seven "Liberator" model. At $99.99, it probably costs more than the original TV prop did  lol

Oh, and Buck Rogers, Fu Manchu, Flash Gordon DVDs ..... I bet they are not compatible with European DVD players though  :(

Reviresco has some paper sci-fi stuff, including ships, but none really big that I can remember:

http://www.tin-soldier.com/

Last year there was a really great scratchbuild project of a large sci-fi ship in the Workbench forum of Lead Adventures.  I'm not sure how far back you'd have to go to find it.  But it would be worth looking, because the builder used many commonly available bits of things to put together a big ship, and posted many pictures of how he did it.
