Tripods of all sizes, Martians of course.
« on: February 14, 2016, 04:22:15 PM »
Hi, I do still occasionally check up on the forum and after seeing Captain Darlings 1/56 Tripod (which was very nice too) I suddenly remembered I made one myself over the xmas hols, so I thought why not..
It was made from the wreckage of a previous Jeff Wayne style one which I was never that happy with over the years, so instead of chucking it I though a major revamp might work. now it looks nothing like the original and is styled after the original HG wells illustrations.   The silver version is work in progress, red being the final colour.  there is also a 28mm figures eye view.
I dont intend to use it in a tabletop wargame (as I dont have any 28mm VSF any more) but I did recently use it in an RPG with the martian invasion occurring, and with it being about 48" high when it was on the table it gave the players with their 28mm characters some idea of just how big a martian tripod would be if it is to 'stride over churches and steeples' as per the original story.
The legs are rolled paper, the body made from two 1/25 scale Vostok kits from the pound shop many years ago. The lights are xmas led bunched up also from the pound shop over xmas.   It occurred to me I wondered what the vostok kits go for on ebay after I had started, though I shouldnt have looked (£80)  ah well, never mind.
He folds up to go in a smaller box and I call him 'Trippy'  the wife suggests I put a collar on him and take him for a walk.
a walking one, now there's an idea..

the last pictures are some of Trippy's smaller martian cousins, plastic kits mostly and they do occasionally wade through 15mm or 6mm VSF causing mayhem.  Silver gang, Gold gang and White gang.. and they fight each other of course.

Great selection of Martian Tripods and accessories.

Trippy is enormous I love it. Nice build! I figure in "1/56" my Martian Tripod is over 60 feet tall your Trippy towers over that from what I can see!

really cool collection! Trippy is awesome.

I also really like the space city in that last picture.

Where are those white tripods from?

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Hi, thanks for the replies. As far as sizes go, tripods can be whatever size you like I suppose, But when it comes to storing models practicalities step in. Mine comes apart for storage otherwise I wouldn't have made it so big.   I forget the exact height but about three and a half feet at 1/60 scale is just over 200' which isn't too big I reckon. The Spielberg movie tripods must be about that size.  There are lots of church steeples in the 300' plus range so I didn't think mine was overly big.

The white tripods are Pendraken miniatures from their 10mm range, the biggest is about 3-4".
The spindly white ones in the background were copeland miniatures I think but not sure they trade any more.  Ground zero might have some of their range.

The White Martian base is scratch built and based upon the designs from the old Jeff Wayne pc game, a favourite of mine and very inspirational.

The gold ones are mostly monsterpocalypse game minis, some modified and repainted, very nice figures but a bit soft material wise.

It's a whole special interest group of its own collecting tripods..
