Sci-Fi Warmachine?
« on: 24 March 2014, 01:34:30 PM »
Hey guys.

Is their a sci-fi game which plays or has a simialr feel to Warmachine. 28/32mm.
By that I mean infantry and a Warjack kind of sci fi Mech as a heavy unit. Kinda like Titanfall

Some examples;

Not that I know of.  Make your own.  Use generic rules and available models.  My Solar Empires setting is similar to Titanfall and Battletech.

Gruntz 15mm, is as the name suggests mainly written for 15mm games but has mechanics very much like Warmachine. Pitiably it has a simple “x boxes” kind of damage track rather then locations like warmachine.

I always hoped Privateer would do a sci-fi game, focus could so easily work as digital warfare resources. I even considered doing a pair of small forces all sci-fied up as a side project but never got beyond the mere conception of the idea.

Nothing I have heard about 40k or Warmachine implies that it and the two are similar in terms of game system.

They aren't. Other than having alternate turns.
So many projects..... so little time.......

They both also have a trend of ever larger models dominating the battlefield, but I think there the comparison ends.

1:take warmachine rules.
2:change names.
4:replace casters with pilot who basically acts as an "off table" unit, heavy damage to the mech can have a chance of killing the caster.the caster represents your various pilots, and each mech that dies reduces his stats.(i'm god awful with numbers so this bit is pure idea juice.)
3:acquire models and setting.
4:play.

Wait you forgot one.  They are also both expensive.

I can build a mixed company with tanks and mecha in 28mm for what an average Warmahoards force cost and we won't even get into 40k. :)

I'm not doubting it :) in ever really got into warmachine, it feels too much like a tournament game with fluff and an overtly steampunk aesthetic tagged on as an after thought.I like steampunk, i like fantasy, i like robots, but warmachine feels like it's all cogs and steam and no punk.

you could probably make a fun little 500 points 40k army for casual group games for the cost of a basic warmahordes force, and then over time add what takes your fancy.but again, warmahordes is more of a tournament system so it's a case of buy it all now then start again next year.

That's very true.

warmahordes is more of a tournament system so it's a case of buy it all now then start again next year.

Depends. There aren't enough new releases for that to be true and the power scale doesn't really apply in the current rule set, for example in the last set of releases for my main army there wasn't a single thing that was a 'must have'. That said, it is very popular as a tournament game and most of those armies are built around a 'gimmick/trick', so assuming they are only building for tournaments then they may well need to buy a new army every year.

As for small model count, it depends on whether you're going for minimum models for a game, size of the game you want to play and whether you want all the options. I have a Warmachine army with about 40 figures in it and feel no need to add anything to it, however I have another one where I want all the options and that isn't small at all (although I only use a similar number of figures in any game).

what if you have a squad of casters who can call down jacks "deep strike" style, and then get taken off the board, acting through the jack using its skills for combat ect but their own skills to control it?
