2 Hours in Birmingham?
« on: April 02, 2014, 01:14:21 PM »
Circumstances conspire so that tomorrow morning I will have 2-3 hours to kill in Birmingham before a meeting. Anyone able to suggest an alternative to sitting in a coffee shop and playing the make-this-coffee-last-an-hour game?

Good bookshops, hobby stores, or the like? Preferably not straying too far from New Street station, the city centre or Millennium point, as my sense of direction is at best wayward.

Cheers
Rob

A while since I was there (shudder), but there used to be an Ian Allan bookshop near to New Street Station and certainly there is a Waterstones.

I suggest a stab vest.

Hmm, not really; Brum city centre is pretty soulless (sadly).

I'd suggest a look in Wayland's Forge or Nostalgia & Comics if you're after something more hobby-related, but the smell (at least in WF) is, erm, powerful. There's also a GW store if you get *really* desperate...

You could also try having a coffee in the new library instead of in a chain shop; at least you have a nice building to look around that way.

If you're feeling up for it, the museum and art gallery are right in the centre too, and are easy to pop by and have a look around in.

It has a bit of a dodgy rep but its not like there is an epidemic of random stabbings going on there.

Ian Allen is still there, it's about 30 seconds walk from the main New Street entrance. Was in there last week, bought some Russians for SAGA. They have deal on 1/48 diecast German jeeps and armoured cars.

You mean like every city that existed ever?

Lol!

Anyway, yeah, Waylands Forge or Ian Allen. Waylands forge is a bit hard to find if you don't know Birmingham, but ask around for Fletcher's Walk and it's in there!

Thanks all, looks like I will stick my head into Ian Allan then.
If I can get through the door what with all the protective gear I'll be wearing  :D
