SKeleton sculpting master?
« on: April 11, 2014, 12:59:04 PM »
Hi All

I am looking for a sculptor to work on some undead, mostly skeletons. So my question is: who is everyones favorite skeleton sculptor?? Which lines of undead minis does everyone like?
Who sculpted the original Celtos line of skeletons.
Does anyone know who sculpted the skeleton ogres from Hobby Products (now with rpe?)
thanks all.

Ebob (here) may have what you're after.

My favourites are these by Otherworld Minaitures, sculpted by Paul Muller.

Paul Muller's sculpted undead for other companies too (including Wyrd and Heresy), and is probably my favourite sculptor overall for this subject. Plus, I think it's one of his favourite themes to work on, and I feel it shows.

I'd have to agree with Paul muller for anything undead or demonic.

The Otherworld ones are really fantastic...so without being overly versed in fantasy miniatures I'd probably agree that's a good place to start.

Everything cool in the celtos range was sculpted by Kev White who now mostly works for his own Hasslefree Miniatures range.

Really do recommend Paul Muller for this too!

I second Otherworld, their skeletons are I think the very best out there.

Skellies are tricky. If you make them with realistic proportions like Ebob they're too fragile and if you do them thickier they look all wrong. Personally, I prefer the realistic approach.

About sculptors, Muller or Olley.

I do enjoy The Risen from privateer press and I must say the newer gw skeletons are great to convert and the wight king they make is epic.

Looks good...I knocked out a bunch of WGF skeletons and while better than the first version I had owned, they were still a bit too thin/tiny.  I feel like I'm going to break them, but I couldn't afford the lovely OW stuff.  I'd like to see how the Heresy ones turn out.

That Heresy skellie looks ok, but most people have more than six teeth in their upper jaw.  Those buck teeth need to be made smaller.

It will look better when it's smaller.  I am sure the teeth are exaggerated so they register well going from 3-up to production.

^Yep, it's a lot like stage makeup...look at features on almost any miniature - made in absurd proportions so that it's recognizable at a 3-4' distance.  I'm sure it'll look fine.  I'm more concerned about the weird lengthy cheek bone style.

The Heresy one looks good but I think exagerating things to "register" is a fairly dangerous trap to negotiate. It had painful consequences for the latest GW ones, which have disasterously bad teeth that were an obvious try in the same direction... make them register. Better to fail the other way and have the shape right and the detail not obvious. The teeth don't need to "stand out" and painters don't need any "favors" by way of deeply etched "detail." Invariably the figure is worse off.

Historically speaking I nominate Andrew Chernak as the skeleton master. Each Grenadier skeleton is marked with an S and a number on the bottom and I have many dozens of them and some marked well into the 200s. And everything was covered from garden variety to orcs, wererats to mammoths, dragons to gag ones like the pizza delivery skeletons. Really finely sculpted too.

Here are some along with a few others from Ral Partha and Prince August:

I realize this won't help you get some sculpted today but you can't talk about a skeleton master without mentioning this guy. :)
