Movie 'The Beast of War' 1988
« on: April 15, 2014, 01:51:03 AM »
Anyone else remember this movie? I remember seeing it a good 20 years ago on TV and enjoyed it. I am not sure why it came to mind tonight but I am interested to see if someone uploaded it to Youtube as I'd like to see it again. I am looking at the website IMBd and they rate it at 7.4 out of 10; thoughts or recollections from anyone else?

Cheers,
 Damien

Yes it was, the story plays out during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. A lone tank gets lost in hostile territory after an attack and the drama begins...

Did they now? I'll have to go to their site and take a look.

Thanks

Is this the one where they end up leaving one of their crew behind and when the Afghans find them, they keep him alive and ask him to blow up the tank for them?

You won't find them on the Eureka website but they were previewed here and on Kosta's blog not too long ago. They are pretty amazing figures.

I remember it, had it on Video-tape, lent it out, never saw it again. Thought it was a great set of scenarios (poss. linked campaign) with not much outlay (1 tank, few figures & maybe a helocopter).
I was most impressed with the scene where they settle down for the night. The tank spews flame to create a kill zone around itself.

In the States it was just called 'The Beast' and was on HBO on a constant loop for a decade it seemed...  Not a bad flick, certainly better than Tank!

Actually it's far more engaging than that other Israeli film set in a tank, 'Lebanon'. Realism is about on par, ie not very and at least this one didn't take itself as seriously. Lebanon rates as one of the all time worst war/ anti-war movies made and that's saying something. The animated Walk with Bashir being an infinitely better film on the same subject.

I forgot Stephen Baldwin is in it, sort of like a 'Pete' Culkin movie...

Picked a copy of this up in HMV for £5.99, good film, I also got the Eureka crew based on the characters at Salute, they are superb!
