Actually it's far more engaging than that other Israeli film set in a tank, 'Lebanon'. Realism is about on par, ie not very and at least this one didn't take itself as seriously. Lebanon rates as one of the all time worst war/ anti-war movies made and that's saying something. The animated Walk with Bashir being an infinitely better film on the same subject.

Saw both "Lebanon" and "The Beast of War". And the first one was quite a strange movie but I somehow managed to watch the entire movie. The Beast of War is way better, I also like the Soviet-Afghanistan setting more than the urban Lebanon setting. Although in my opinion the scene in the Beast of War with the local being forced under a soviet tank track is just too gruesome to watch ... even after seeing the movie several times.
