I am beginning to understand how it was that an island nation didn't become a maritime power until the 20th C. I wouldn't want to sail in one of those in a mild breeze on the Serpentine.

The Japanese pretty much limited themselves to coastal sailing and so didn't fully explore the necessity for true ocean going vessels until the end of the long peace.

Obviously there were ocean vessels (trade ships and the like) but from what I can gather, losses in storms etc were quite high.

OK the Korean imjin war ships do take priority

Not yet but I did watch 'Roaring Currents' on dvd the other week and thought it was rather inspirational (same tale but in film form).

There's some good screen shots to grab from it  :)
