Carls Samurai (Oni and Peasant Dwelling on page 3)
« on: April 23, 2014, 01:02:49 PM »
Figured I would use this thread to post my samurai progress which is moving at a glacial pace.

First up is two old glory Ashigaru archers. Got 3 more I am hoping to finish by the weekend.

Need to sort the basing out and fix sort out the feet including the chipped paint but I a relatively happy with them.

They are decent minitures for the price, even if their faces are a bit mangled. I am enjoying painting them, which is a lot more than I can say for my wgf samurai can't get any enthusiasm for them.

Basing them on pennies and using warbase unit trays with cutouts. This way I can use them for kings of war and single base then for other games such as Ronin. Allows me to be flexible and switch them to other bases with cutouts without rebasing. Had a great experience with warbases and would recommend them to anyone looking for movement trays.

Credit goes to Jim for the penny idea.

Christ, don't say that mate, that's an idea almost as old as gaming itself  lol

I do clear trays though, if that takes your fancy  :)

I didn't mean you invented it, just that I wouldn't have thought of it without you.

May use them for skirmish trays in the future. ATM thought I can't be trusted to send an address can I?

Thank you. They are standard infantry so don't want to spent to much time on them and overcomplicate them (That said they are still taking a while). They are poor Ashigaru so don't want outlandish colours or intricate lacing. Will have a few lacing colour varieties though so they don't end up looking too similar.

A few different shades of underclothes goes well to mix it up a bit and coupled with the different lacings you'll have a good looking force.

Don't have too outlandish colours though, go for the more subdued portion of the spectrum  :)

Thanks for the advice.

The other colours for the lacing are dark red and dark blue ATM.

Underclothes are a lighter blue and some browns.

Should have pictures soon.

So half of my Ashigaru unit is painted and based. Base is still a little wet but I wanted to photograph them. Need to dig out the GF's camera in the future instead of the Ipad although there is only so much a camera can make up for poor lighting. Sorry the picture quality isnt great. Will try to get some better shots up when I have more daylight to aid me. Probably when the whole unit is done.

I also need to paint a ring of brown or black around the edge of the bases.

Any critique, tips or suggestions are welcome as always.

I wanted to add this. Its a mock up of how my General will be based. Its mostly held together with blue tack and optimisum. I will probably change the banner bearer to a running one but my running banner bearer decided blue tack wouldnt hold him together so I swapped him out for one cast all in one with the banner already attached.

The General will stay the same unless I find a better Uesgui Kenshin model and so will the body guard unless I can find a model with an Ogre mask and Kanabo (Apparently Steel Fist will be releasing one but I dont know when exactly.

I may get the base redone with one of the penny cut outs further forward and one further back so they look less in line.

Looking good, the only suggestion I have is maybe an extra wash on the cloak to darken it.
