Battle at Murch's! Another Pulp Alley AAR!
« on: April 29, 2014, 01:18:05 AM »
Word gets out that the local Murch's Trading Post at Karnak has just received a fresh shipment of ice cold Coca-Cola!
Here is the board, Murch's across from a tourist trap Ramses head with freshly arrived supplies dumped behind the trading post.

Only the 1st plot point was on the board to start, the finder of 1 places 2, and the finder of 2 places the Major Plot Point!
Knowing surely that must be a ruse for something underhanded, three groups rush to the scene!

Team Possible with Kimberly Possible, Ronald and Suki the Ninja!

Possible's ole rival, Evy O'Connel, Rick and Jonathan!

Newly arrived from the bush, Tennessee Buck with his companion The Huntress and Lion his bulldog!

The three groups warily approach the truck that the Coke should be in.
Seeing the redhead, TN pops off a shot, grazing her.
[the red d6 by a figure represent a wound]

Rick strides forth, pistols blazing!

Kim reaches the truck but cant get the crate open!

Lion rushes Suki barking his dreaded death Bark, only to be shown the drop kick O Ninja death!

The Huntress rushes Jonothan with her knife only to have him ungentlemanly show her the butt of the Enfield!

Lead flies around the Ford but Kim finally gets the crate open only to find a pair of oily gloves and not a refreshing beverage. Wasn't there an oily barrel around the side of the Trading Post? [Plot Point 2]

Rick rushes around the Ford only to be attacked from behind by who?

BAM! Oh its you...

Hmmm how do you open this thing?

Meanwhile after sucker punching the uncouth Englishman, the Huntress stalks over the hot tin roof!

Within the barrel Rick find a shipping invoice to deliver cases of Coke and one coffin.
A coffin? [The Major Plot Point!] Wasnt there a coffin behind the trading post?

Everyone rushes to the back! Bullets, fists and dastardly cards a'flyin!

Hmmm, I've opened ancient sarcophagus and I cant figure this out?
The Pembroke scholars wont be happy.

Take that!

Shhhh, there's no one up here...

Who do I shoot first and why does that fella look so happy with the scrap of paper he got from the coffin?

Here I come! Give me that scrap of paper!

I'm not afraid to hit a girl!

TN Buck rushes in to help Huntress and they put Ron into the dirt, but Evy grabs the now loose scrap of paper and run for it!*

TN and Kim give chase!
A dastard slip puts Buck down! [A leader killer card, make 3 successes or take 3 hits... I didn't make it]
Out of ammo, Kim watches in frustration as Evy once again foils her!

Another exciting game that went down to the wire this time. The game was extended by cards out to 7 turns and my youngest playing Evy grabbed the win on turn 6 and ran! My eldest playing Kim, took second with 2 minor points and ole Dad comes in third with nada. At least this time I didn't have all my team down.  ;D Yes, we're still using 432 leagues for time reasons. We also used no frill rules, but the girls are getting it and I hope to start playing with the full rules soon. The pain of defeat was lessened by the joy of being beaten in a wargame by my daughters while sincerely trying to win.  ::)

And yes we raised the board up above the table. Good trick that.
As usual, thanks to the usual suspects!

*This is where I cost my eldest the game. She had all the plot points at this point in time and I didn't realize that when I took Ron down, I didn't get the plot point and Evy was the only one who hadn't moved yet this turn. The rest is as they say, history and a third win for number two daughter.

An enjoyable AAR. Me thinks Tennessee Buck is the winner anyways for obvious reasons.  ;)

As best as I recall it was sculpted by Copplestone for RLBPS and they only sell it at shows.

Well, somehow I don't reckon he's from Gawga, or Alabama...

Looks like one o'them thar EAST Tennessee Cumberland Gap Bucks.

Real question is, who makes the nifty RED pick'emup truck?

I have too many already but that one looks especially snappy!!

Sounds like you had another great game, Amalric. You must really enjoy getting your daughters involved in playing Pulp Alley. A great report, thanks.

The Red pickup appears to be a Matchbox Models of Yesteryear Ford AA truck. I have a green one.

Hmmmm...

That's been scaled to 1/46,'bout like the Crossleys, which appear "biggish" to me eye.

Any chance you could measure the model's wheelbase?  In inches for choice.

Real AAs came in 131.5" & 157", so that could make it more appealing to me.

& we all know RED makes 'em look bigger...

From the centrepoint of the front wheel to the centrepoint of the real wheel was about 2 & 13/16".

I found that it is actually the most perfectly sized of all the vehicles I have (I actually have two - one closed and one open). But I am using slightly larger figures (roughly 32mm, give or take) on average.

Great!! Thank you so much!!

2 & 13/16" = 2.8125" so:

Ford AA 131.5" WhB = 1/47
Ford AA 157"    WhB = 1/56

I shall have to look for one and judge for myself

The green '39 Chevy (2.125") on the table, with the fuel drum,  is damn near perfect for my needs.
Depends if you call it a 1/2 ton (113.5") 1/53 or a 3/4 ton (123.75") 1/55.

In game the AA looks bigger, but it was longer than either, by a good bit.  & it is RED...

I found that it is actually the most perfectly sized of all the vehicles I have (I actually have two - one closed and one open). But I am using slightly larger figures (roughly 32mm, give or take) on average.

At the end of the day, or the beginning of the game, it's all a matter of what looks good to my admittedly imperfect Mk. 1 Eyeball.  1/48ish in vehicles "looks" BIG to me with my mostly Murch Men, while above 1/56 is entirely too tiny to be used.  O gauge train stuff DOES work for me, as do 1/4 scale airplanes...  Go figger....

I'm my still pondering basing my vehicles.  I believe that would please me better visually.
However,  I couldn't  really "Vroom, Vroom, Vroom" anymore...

I say bloody good show old chap!!!
Though 'tis a sad thing when the old dog won't hunt no more and the pupil outstrips the master.  When I started playing against my girls they made the rule that I had to play the same as against my other opponants, otherwise the win wouldn't be the same. So no matter what, be it VSF, Pulp, CS, Naval or aircombat games I must be as mean, sneaky, crafty, underhanded and tatically aware. Which is a good thing as it has made the girls a better gamer FAST....they nearly beat me last game!!!

Oh and I really don't think Evy would mind WHAT the Pembroke Scholars thought of her.....

As it was the BEMBRIDGE scholars that rejected her....again!!!

Thanks for all the kind words.

DOH! My Bad...  :?

The red truck is indeed a Matchbox AA 32 Ford code YGB20.
It came with a removable top for the bed and is;
1.5" wide
4.25" long
2 7/8" from center of front wheel to center of rear
scale pics to come as soon as I fix my bloody camera

Here is my review of the green truck;

With all the interest in Pulp Trucks of late I thought to show scale pics of my latest acquisition, a 1939 Chevy Pick Up Truck by Lledo. It scales to my eye around 1/50ish which is my sweet spot for 28mm gaming vehicles. The barrels lift out for further gaming utility. I picked this up from ebay for $7 including S&H.

What I like is that this one has the stylish radiator grill cover of the late 30's Detroit deco styling!
It maybe a bit upscale for the boonies, but just the thing for our well heeled Hero's or that evil Oil Company Exec.

The blue plastic barrels pop right out and I'll be picking up at last 1 more for the USN.

Enjoy
