I used to have that clear Frodo, and always wondered, what primer should I use to paint him?  lol

As may have been noticed, Osprey Wargames, in collaboration with North Star, recently released their long awaited fantasy battle game 'Oathmark'.

I have dusted off my Isengard, Rohan, Gondor, Dwarf, and Viking (Dunland) forces for a solo test run, but I have not gotten very far, yet (the usual real life issues), only about 2½ turn in by now.

This was the initial set-up - ignore the unpainted 3D-printed terrain, I am planning to get some of it painted when I have finished the test game:

I expect to spend some time at the table during the weekend, especially Saturday, as the forecast promises rain most of the day, and the garden chores will have to wait-

That's a pretty big battle, no wonder it takes a while. How many points is it?

I haven't worked out the points, just got stuff on the table, and I am actually painting and/or rebasing reinforcements for Isengard along the way, too (you may notice one unit growing while advancing).

Here is a short report on Turn 3:

Great to see them coming out en masse what do you think of the rules?

It is a little too early for me to pass a final verdict, so I shall have to come back to you on that after a few games.

For now:
Is it playable: Yes
Is it 'the game we have all been waiting for'? Well, yes and no; some of us certainly have been waiting for the release (two years from announcement), but I don't think it is all that ground-breaking. Some things are new and interesting, some seem clunky and old-fashioned, whereas some details are just weird Example: All combat dice rolls are made against a Target Number, which is adjusted according to circumstances, so you work out the TN and roll the dice. Penalties are plusses to the TN. This works fine. Then when you take Morale Tests, suddenly penalties are minuses to your dice roll, so you have to think completely opposite. WHY? It is confusing, and even more so when you have been playing for a while and getting tired in the head. I think I am going to rework the morale modifier table to work the same way as the combat/shooting modifiers, 'cause that detail is just annoying.
And then McCulloughs' strange notion carried over from Frostgrave that armour is only giving single extra points of defense, and for instance cavalry with light armour having much better defense than infantry with heavy armour (actually so high that most infantry will have a really hard time inflicting casualties on them) does not sit very well with me.

But I shall have to play some points-balanced games against living opponents before I decide whether or not to make Oathmark my go-to fantasy battle game - I suspect that the Isengard force in my current game is heavily overmatched, but I have not yet had the time/energy to figure out the points totals.

It's not all Oathmark around here, I also finished painting Sam Gamgee for my side project 'Frodo's Quest':

You've captured nicely that "pissed off" look.

Well, he does look a bit grumpy, doesn't he?  lol

Thanks, I always find faces easy to paint, but distinct facial expressions not so much. The contrast basecoat on his flesh did help a lot bringing out that frown, though.

Very nice! I am glad to see you use those models!

Finally a set of rules that lets me use my odd-sized groups of painted models  lol
But, seriously, I have a HUGE collection of LotR stuff, so it suits me fine to have some motivation for getting more of it ready for the table!

Great pictures, thanks for sharing!

Much obliged, and thanks for looking!  ;)
