Looks like a challenging rumble! Especially when the dice give you such difficulty. We have one player who has been known for 25 years to pull critical hits out of his...dice bag...in critical moments. Likewise, we have another player who has rolled horribly poorly on multiple evenings, RPG or wargame, no matter what dice we put on his hands. Will statisticians tell you that evens out?

I like the hills and ruins, just enough to give some terrain issues, while still having plenty of arm space on that big board to move the minis.

Great rep, thanks!

With the Riders of Rohan did you pin the horses legs? I had some broken ones that look great and feel a lot more secure now than the originals balancing on one thin hoof.

I actually didn't assemble any of those, bought them second hand as shown.

I have until now only painted 2 or 3 Rohan riders (and several years ago), and those i did not pin. I don't really enjoy painting horses (or any other large mini); as I am not a very fast painter, it feels like ages to finish a cavalry model.

I am going to pin a Minas Tirith horse, though, that broke its only ground-touching leg, when a box of painted minis was toppled over by the dog some months ago, while I was preparing my army for Horisont.

I think I am almost motivated for painting up 5-6 riders and Éomer for 2 points of Hearthguard and Warlord of a proxy Norman warband for SAGA. Might be my next stage of this ever expanding endeavour.

They probably will, but it is poor consolation for us hitting the nether quartile.  >:D

:)

We just threw the usual selection of bits and bobs on the table for a quick start-up (I really should get some more, and diverse, pieces slammed together). But it works, as long as you don't expect carefully planned, themed terrain with every game...  lol

I am moving into Blood Eagle with my LotR minis, and I have started Building a Rohan/Saxon warband with previously painted minis.

My leader is Aedelric, using this mini:

Stats for him on my blog.

Yes, I'll be using the Franks list for starting a small Eored, but I have only 2 finished riders, so it will have to wait until I have finished painting my Vikings warband, as I may want to paint some more.

Blood Eagle really has my mind working on how to get a lot of stalled projects back on track!

The Warriors of Rohan are GORGEOUS...your FINE brushwork & SPLENDID choice of colors have done wonders with the minis. VERY WELL DONE!

Thank you!  :)

It's been a while since these were painted, but I shall now very soon have to rebase all the members of the 'Defenders of the East emnet' warband on steel washers (I would have sworn, I would never start down that path, but, hey, we all evolve), I just have to stat out and phototograph the rest of them, first.

This was the very first Rohan spearman I painted, and it shows  lol

First Fyrd Skirmisher with stats on the blog.

Soon the Rohan/Saxon warband will be done, and I can start fleshing out some Uruk-Hai Scouts.

Lovely colouring (particularly the green and the gold. What gold are you using?).

Lovely colouring (particularly the green and the gold. What gold are you using?).

Thanks!

The brightest gold is probably the recipe I still use:

Gold++black, gold+black, gold, gold+silver, can be final highlighted with pure silver or silver with a tiny bit gold.

I use a pot of 'yellow' gold, and mix in small amounts of black until I hit a tone I like, so I cannot give the exact recipe, but you cannot botch it up, just reverse the process if the gold gets too dark. Adding the black also helps the basecoat covering the primer (I use black), which can often be difficult with metallics.

The 'red' gold  is probably Citadel bronze or either burnished or shining gold (I don't remember which one was the 'red' one) with whatever highlights available out of the pot; it was painted some years ago.

At some point, I even basecoated areas to be painted gold with silver, then painted thinned gold on top, but I like my layering technique better.

Thanks for that - I sometimes highlight with silver, but I never thought about mixing black into a basecoat layer.
