Hi David,

It does to a certain degree depend on your painting style. Those colours are classic green-yellow or a washed out olive type clot. I use army painter goop and some washes so tho sods change the colour a bit. If you were layer painting then your can be more specific with actual colours.

...so what paint style would you use to get these colours?

Happy W

Somewhere in the back of my mind i had the idea that i could use my Brigaders as the 5th. I even made a Communist standard for the part (well, got it off Iain/Warflags) ...

Look forward to seeing photos of your project.

Vallejo Middlestone as a base, lighten with Iraqi Sand, that should be about right.

I'd likely use Vallejo German Cammo Beige, maybe mix in a little Russian Green.

I would use layer painting.
Vallejo Middlestone I use for my WW2 german tanks base coat ?
The colour looks more light Khaki green.
I think the colour in the picture is a wee  bit lighter than it should be, but colour fade with time?
I will try a white sheet of paper and mix colours till I get near it from your comments
Cheers
David

The Khaki in the Tamiya range has a greenish tinge to it.

Any shade of Greenish tinged khaki would do, but bear in mind Uniform issue, was hardly" uniform" so a selection of various shades will probably look the part. Might be worth checking what stocks the uniforms were issued from, as the Republic utilised various sources to get their clothing. Bueno is not the best source material for the Republic, he has a serious right wing slant  lol

without question, but how does this affect the uniforms depicted?

There was a question over the depth of research he undertook for the Republican stuff, and there are elements of characterisation in a number of the illustrations. that being said, it is still the best single source for both sides in the conflict. Also worth bearing in mind, the pictures are painted in what appears to be watercolour paint, so the shades look a bit lighter. I always recommend using more than one source as a reference, it is also well worth an in-depth google search for period photos of the combatants, its quite impressive to see the variation in uniform, and equipment being utilised.

I doubt the reliability of this source too; he has a British International Brigade member wearing a Union Flag armband, something I have never seen mentioned in any source or in any photograph of the period.

I always recommend using more than one source as a reference,
this is also a given, of course

but now I understand what You mean, yes the accuracy and investment to the research can be an issue...

I must admit I wondered about the amount of red stars in the Bueno book

This is as far I had painted till I worked out the correct colour

I will do some better pictures as I progress
The bases was 2p and the figures glued on.
the the bases was done with a 50% sand and 50% woodglue.
Then wood glue was add to hold on the mixed gravel/sand mix.
I undercoat Black.
then I take off any bits touching the boots.
first base coat Steel Legion Drab.(GW)
Dry brushed top with Tallarn Sand.(GW)
light Dry brushed wit Bleached Bone.(GW)
pick out some stones with Skull White.(GW)
the figure is gone over with Black.
Base colour of uniform painted. Olive Grey 70888 Vallejo.
